Purple Cloak Rebellion

During the reign of Emperor Clovis the Cruel, the Sameliund Empire began to systematically round up and imprison wielders of the arcane arts. This was said to have been a response to a failed supposedly magical assassination attempt of the emperor's only son and heir. For two decades, parents lived in fear that the imperial guards of the Amethystine Magisterium would appear at their doorstep, ready to take their magically adept children to the Amethyst Tower in the far western part of the empire. There, they would be reinstructed and assimilated into an elite magical fighting force loyal only to the emperor himself.
Those who could not or would not be made loyal to the emperor were kept on at the tower as academics, furthering the cause of arcane research. Those who would not accept their roles were used as research subjects. No matter the outcome, if a child was taken to the Amethyst Tower, it was the last he or she saw of their family of birth.

The silence of the early morning was rocked by an arcane explosion that took the entire top third of the Amethyst Tower in a swirl of blue energy. In one swift stroke, the majority of the imperial garrison left to monitor the daily goings-on at the Amethystine Magisterium was entirely obliterated.

The battle was brief but decisive...

The remainder of the imperial forces were expeditiously routed by the fledgling magicians and sorcerers, with Magister Risterio Thornlash leading the charge. In a matter of hours, the empire's magical reeducation camp was destroyed, the prisoners once held there free after two decades of subjugation. They fortified the small island which housed the tower and set about preparing to repel what reinforcements Emperor Clovis might send their way once word of this disastrous loss met his ears.
