Heartrender, Ashardalon's Bane

Wielded by Dydd the Wise, this Ironwood scimitar rent the heart from the chest of the Great Wyrm before his banishment to the Abyss. It is said to be imbued with the fire and fury of the mad and cruel red dragon.

While wielding Heartrender, it functions as a +1 scimitar. In order to attune to this weapon and unleash the relic power within, the wielder must be neutral on at least one alignment axis, as well as be able to understand and speak the ancient Druidic language. To call forth the flames of the red dragon, the wielder speaks the word "laom". Calling forth the power of the Great Wyrm will sacrifice a 5th level spell slot for the wielder. The flaming burst will explode on a critical whether or not the flames of Ashardalon have been invoked.

Description

This scimitar was originally a Masterwork weapon created with a dragonbone hilt and Ironwood blade. It was made for and wielded by Dydd the Wise, druid of the Circle of Elements. When Dydd struck the blow which rent the heart from the Great Wyrm Ashardalon, it is said that the blade was magically imbued with fire and the force of all the malice of the cruel red dragon, changing the blade to a polished onyx color.

Lore: This weapon has been lost to time and legend. It is not known what became of Heartrender upon the death of Dydd, as her entire party was wiped out by Ashardalon the Undying. The historians and arcane academics believe that as it is a magical item of great power, it could not have been destroyed. Therefore, it was most probably acquired by either Ashardalon himself or one of his cultists from the nearby Sunless Citadel.
