Orru Shipwrights

Orru Shipwrights is a shipbuilding company owned and operated by the Orru family/clan. The company is respected far and wide for its extremely high-end ships and innovative designs. The ships have groundbreaking, dynamic shapes and a trademark orangey wood colour. The same colour is worn by employees, making them easy to recognize out in the world. Orru shipwrights are also highly sought after to maintain ships during long journeys.   The Orru shipyard is located on an island by the same name. A natural bay lies between tall cliffs – the scale of the whole island and all nature on it feels slightly larger than life. Most of the island is covered by a grand redwood forest surrounding one particularly huge specimen (‘Old Orru’) which is kept secret from outsiders (I think they’re all one tree (we’re all connected, man) and Old Orru is like the great Deku tree whom we hang out with). In the bay and on the nearby cliffs are multiple hangars, workshops, docks, and living quarters. The company also has a small customer-facing office on the docks of Saltmarsh.   Though the clan are quirky by firbolg standards, many of them are still highly in tune with nature and carefully influence the huge redwood trees in the island’s forest to grow with the qualities needed to build fine ships with. The wood has slight magical properties. It is unclear if these qualities are caused by centuries of casting plant growth or if the area around Old Orru is inherently magical.   Most clan members/employees know a little bit of everything about shipbuilding but specialize in one skill. The company doesn’t run with departments or hierarchies, but people seek each other out to work on specific projects. People are expected to know their own weaknesses and work together to produce the best work they can.   Currently, around 40(?) Orru clan members are active employees, working in forestry, design, carpentry, communication etc. A number of other clan members live on the island but aren’t directly involved with the company. Others have gone off to follow different passions – it’s respected and encouraged for clan members to find what they want to do in life. Occasionally, Orru Shipwrights takes in skilled outsiders to train and hone their craft; an Orru endorsement guarantees an excellent career.
