Djell'ak (djɛll'ak)

Once the spot in which the first few inhabitants of Djell had been washed ashore, it only took a couple of decades for this village to turn into a bustling hub of trade, immigration, and culture. Trade, because many of the scarce resources from this continent were deemed desirable treasures back on Ynora. Immigration, since many of those who struggled to make a living for themselves in their homelands would come to this sandy continent in search for a new life, hoping to make the next big discovery and be showered in gold and other riches. And lastly culture, as people from all over Ynora, from all social classes, from every religion, and from whatever trade they have learnt.   It is quite common to find brethren from the East and West Kathelian Empires sitting at the same table, drinking sparkling fruit-infused waters, swaying back and forth to a mythical tune played by musician on his unknown instrument; to find a Swamp Dweller with glistening royal blue skin sitting in the shadow of an alley, having lost everything, begging for money in the different tongues they have learned in school; to find people reciting religious poems to numerous pages of their prayer booklets, each of them depicting a different god.
Nobody, who has ever set a foot onto the lands of Djell'ak, is able to forget the feeling of belonging they felt here. Unlike a home, unlike a parent, unlike one's own bed--here you belong to strangers, to the vast desert, to the deep experience everything and nothing.

History

A few shipwrecked travellers from Ynora washed up ashore in the southeast of Djell and settle down in the year II, 7143. Finding themselves on the dry beaches of this unknown land, starved and dehydrated they were seeking for water, for food, for shelter from the brutal rays of the sun they once believed brought life but now seemed to only inflict pain upon their bodies. Taking pieces of their ship, which had made their way to the shore with them, to build a first primitive hut allowed them to flee into the shade and cool down for a while. Lighting a campfire at night, they were able to boil some water and capture the steam with a broken pan they had found on the beach to get some liquids into their system.

It took them a few days to settle in but the raw fight to stay alive caused them to quickly get into a routine: Garon eb Dagu coordinated the group, taking stock, knew where everyone was, all while continuing to build their shelter. Nân Maniim had built a spear from some a long wooden stick and some shell shards, she had gathered on the coast, and was now exploring the closer vicinity, coming back with new discoveries each day. This continent might be barren but in a situation like this, one's sense heighten and creativity peaks--every little color difference in the soil might hint at a secret spring underneath, each stone should be closely examined as it could be a nut or an insect, every sound could be an animal that would provide nourishment for the day. Gerëa Neda went on long trips up and down the beach in search of anything useful that the tides might have left. Clumps of algae, strange rocks, pieces of driftwood, scraps of fabric presumably from their ship, whatever seemed useful she would bring back to Garon at the camp. Xmet Gâjull was tasked with turning anything edible the scavengers brought into actual food as he had been a chef in his former life on Ynora. A handful of other people had survived alongside them but most of them either couldn't take the stress of the situation and left for the far reaches of the desert in the middle of the night, or just never came back from their hunt for resources. It did not take very long until their names were forgotten.

Discovering a nearby mountainous area that must have once been overgrown by lush forests and, therefore, could supply a sheer endless amount of firewood and a deep ravine about four kilometers inland that contained clay, their means of living stabilised over the next few months. From then on, life became easier. It was still awfully difficult, but at least they had less of a hard time to stay alive.   Over the next years, the group managed to further improve their situation until at some point, a few of them managed to build a ship from driftwood and materials they gathered in the area around Djell'ak. Missing their loved ones, Nân and two others decided to return to to their homes in Ynora, while the rest stayed and awaited for newcomers to arrive on this continent, once the information about the discovery of Djell would have spread
