The Oracle / Fate Duo

Once you have an Event Seed, you need to determine what actionable event(s) can be determined from the Seed.   This is where the Oracle comes in.   The Event Seed gives us the basis for speculation. It should be used to generate up to a few Yes/No questions which can be used to further propel the adventure. Let's look at our previous seed. We notice a couple of interesting things, based on the Sinker:
  • All inns are full/there's nowhere to stay
  • It's forbidden to stay outside of the city
  • The mobs of homeless are not friendly
  Two questions comes to mind:
  • Is this a straightforward snatch and grab?
  • Is it dangerous for the PCs to sleep outside at night?
This is when we go to the FSO (Fate Solo Oracle) table. The Yes or No generated gives us the determinant; the + or - generates the potential for one or two positive or negative Surprises. Two + generates two positive surprises, two - generates two negative surprises.

Before the roll is made, both players should determine what the outcome will look like - essentially by playing off of or spinning the aspect(s) generated for the Event Seed. Let's start with the first aspect of the Event Seed. Each player should choose one option or the other and come up with a concealed result for each.   Is this a straightforward snatch and grab?
  • Yes: Find and retrieve Mr. X during a city-wide celebration (stays the same).
  • No: Find and retrieve Mr. X during the height of the city-wide celebration (slight change; an immediate compel should be considered).
The second question, Is it dangerous for the PCs to sleep outside at night?, can likewise be considered, or you can wait for the result of the first question.
  • Yes: It's Dangerous. Survive a night inside the city walls amidst the unkind homeless
  • No: It's not Dangerous. Survive a night inside the city walls amidst the unkind looking but mostly harmless homeless (notice slight change)
Once you've determined what Yes and No look like, determine the odds of a positive (Yes) answer; let's look at the first question. Snatch and grabs are rarely straightforward (where's the fun in that?), so the odds of a Yes are Poor. Dice are rolled and the table's consulted. We roll a -2; looking on the Poor column, that's a "No," which means No to our question (so this will NOT be a simple snatch and grab).   For our second question, Is it dangerous for the PCs to sleep outside at night?, we determine the odds are Good. We roll a +3 generating a Yes, and there's potential for 1 positive Surprise.
