Darkrider

Darkriders are a form of alien (demonic) possession where most of the time the host is in control, but it can take possession at any time. Several cultures see this as a blessing, but most know that nothing good comes from it. Those with darkriders often exhibit uncanny speed, strength, and resilience.
The ritual to create Darkriders were thought to be lost on Homeworld before The Folk fled to the stars.

Causes

Typically through a ritual specifically designed to bind an alien (demonic) spirit to a host.

Symptoms

To someone unable to detect mystical influences upon a person, the person seems to first become detached from reality and then exhibits more and more cruel and evil tendencies.

Treatment

Death, if possible (the being is now incredibly difficult to kill) will sever the connection; a carefully developed counter-ritual may free the host.

Prognosis

The host will eventually be consumed by the presence inside and eventually they will die. Towards the end, when the demon is strongest, the host will have very little mental activity as their mind succumbs to the continual horror of residing with a being of such great evil.

Epidemiology

Though it is believed that an escaped demon at the end of the host's life can find an enter another host, this has not been proven.
