Centrality / Fate Duo

The interaction of NPCs and Obstacles in Fate Duo can be modified according to the centrality of an NPC or obstacle to the storyline. This is a secondary characteristic designed to help develop the NPC or obstacle's High Aspect or method of interacting with the story.   NPCs and Obstacles may fall in one of several categories that determines how important they are to the storyline:
  • Central to the Story: The NPC or obstacle is integral to impacting the current storyline
  • Tangent to the Story: The person or feature may or may not be significant towards impacting the storyline
  • Off Tangent: The NPC or obstacle has nothing to do with the storyline - and in fact, following it will most likely lead further away from the current story - but the players rarely know that when they first meet.
  • Scene Coloring: The NPC or obstacle is insignificant both in general and in terms of the storyline, but again, the characters may not realize that. If an NPC, rarely does this person begin as more than a Nameless NPC.
The characters come across a Secret Room with Maps of the City Tunnels while investigating the mists, but you get the result Off Tangent for Centrality. This is a great time to ask "Why would my character become interested in these maps in this secret room?" The Oracle ("Should I enter?") and Compels work great at this point.   Centrality is completely optional and sometimes unnecessary: i.e., if you're dealing with the NPC whom the characters are trying to find - he/she is the object of the story, and therefore central to it.
