Vatn Illi Andinn Myth in Xotera (RFD Campaign Setting) | World Anvil

Vatn Illi Andinn

Vatn Illi Andinn or "Demon Lake" as it is known in common, is a bizarre body of water that rises and falls several inches every three to four minutes. There is great debate about the cause of this phenomenon among the superstitious and religious parts of the community and the more academically minded parts of the community.

Academic Explanation

According to scholars and researchers, the lake rises and falls at a regular tempo due to pressures in the surrounding air as well as under the lake in the lake bed itself, though they have never been able to satisfactorily recreate a model of this that would convince others. It further complicates matters that those willing to believe a scientific explanation still are unable to observe what they consider a logical cause, such as bubbles rising from the lake (there are none) or movement in the surrounding earth rather than just the level of the water.

Mythic Explanation

A greater demon broke free from the hells and made its way to the community, notably where there was never any body of water nearby. The demon abducted the children of the town's leader. This man, desperate for the return of his children, promised to handsomely reward whatever champion could best the demon. A champion named Hetja soon arrive and battled the demon, besting him with radiant fire. The fire burned a hole into the ground where the demon fell, which became a lake in time as the radiant inferno melted nearby ice and snow. Though the body of the demon eventually burned away, the heart remained, at the bottom of the lake, refusing to die. It is the slow heartbeat of the demon's heart that causes that lake to rise and fall.
