Experimental Medicine Research Outpost

To the north of Eolas Forest in a small settlement is a group of academic-minded researchers (all followers of Oghma) who are determined to systematically and exhaustively catalog all medicinal properties of all known plants and other substances on Xotera. Their work has included short- and medium-term randomized controlled trials, basic observational studies, and chemical reaction studies with the help of a regional leading alchemist.   The researchers estimate they have fully documented the true medicinal properties and side effects of 6-7% of known substances, but they project this endeavor will take many years, especially given a recent uptick in discoveries of previously unknown plans and substances. The group's pie-in-the-sky goal is to document not only that native to Xotera, but substances from all the planes of existence.

Notable Findings

To date, the researchers have only uncovered a few dozen previously unknown applications of medicinal substances, but they have experimentally determined that many wives' tales and traditional applications are scientifically insignificant, though many townspeople still cling to the tradition despite the researchers' findings.    The group is credited with discovering:
  • A new root paste application that offers minor antifungal properties.
  • Three new hallucinogenic compounds.
  • A soft stone that, when crushed, offers relief for stomach problems.
  • Two previously used "health elixirs" that offer no observable benefit whatsoever.
  • The surprising efficacy of a bone-strengthening brew made from the toxins of a rare forest beetle.
  • Harmful poisoning effects of three common fertility "teas."
  • Teratogenic effect of root vegetables grown with soil from the southwestern regions of Xotera where the Baraba gods walked.

Research Dissemination

The group initially planned to write thorough-yet-dry reports on each of their findings and send it to all healers, libraries, and educational facilities throughout Xotera. This plan quickly proved to be an utter failure, and though the group did good work, little if any of it was actually put into practice.    One researcher recognized early on that it would be hard to change the inertia of "treatments" handed down through generations, so the research team recruited a bard, also a follower of Oghma, to travel the continent weaving news of their findings into epic poems and songs to help disseminate the true knowledge in a format readily accepted by the common folk.
