Overview of the Gods
The Role of Gods
On Xo, Ox, and in many other places in the Prime Material Plane, the gods are real and demonstrable, and they influence, and are influenced by, events in this plane. This means that the power of a god is measured by the extent of their influence, and number and devotion of worshippers. While a god influences events on Xo, they rarely physically manifest. Rather they make revelations in the dreams of people, signs in the weather, or are the hand in the actions of a powerful person. There are roughly three categories of gods, measured by their power and influence. Lesser gods tend to have a jurisdiction such as luck, trickery, winter, or the sun, which they have in common with quasi gods (often called saints, angels, devils or demons). The difference between a lesser god and the quasi god is very much the extent of their influence, in particular, their ability of lesser gods to influence many planes of existence at the same time. Greater gods, on the other hand, are generally without a jurisdiction, and usually have a range of lesser gods and quasi gods in league with them, as such, they are generally the leaders of a pantheon. The gods worshipped on Xo are called by other names on other worlds, as their name is generally a feature of the cults and cultures that worship them. This means also that different groups of worhippers on Xo may refer to the same god by different names. Gods do not derive power by their names, rather by the intent of their worhippers. The gods grant eternal life and power through divine magic. Whether the eternal life is spiritual and on an outer plane, or through reincarnation, or in some sort of servitude, is dependent of the god. The number of domains a god can grant, depends somwhat on the extent of their jurisdiction. A saint, usually grants one or two domains, a lesser god three to five domains, while a greater god can grant all domains, apart form a very few (mostly not granting those that are oppositional to them).Deity |
