Fairy
Basic Information
Anatomy
Fairies are very similar to humans in appearance but have pointy ears and different hair colours (orange, green, blue, pink, or purple hair is common in fairies but has never been seen in humans).
Different types of fairies vairy quite a bit from one another, but are all variations of the same humanoid model. Giants are the biggest of them all, reaching a height of 3.5 meters on average and are the strongest physically as well as magically. High elves are about the same size as humans but are less muscular because they rely on magic more than physical strength. Lesser elves have similar size and proportions to 4 year-old children, but with adult looking faces. Pixies are by far the weirdest looking of all fae types. They're only 5cm in height, with bug like wings on their backs and talons on their feet.
Genetics and Reproduction
Giants, high elves, and lesser elves reproduce the same way as most organisms, with sexual reproduction. Pixies are an exception to this, as they are created by the giants through a magic ritual.
Growth Rate & Stages
Pixies have the simplest lifecycle of all fairies. They emerge from the blood of giants fully grown and they only live for a short amount of time (about a month). The rest of the fae types reach adulthood at about 20 years of age, like humans, but after that they age a lot slower because they live a lot longer than humans. More specifically, lesser elves have an average lifespan of 500 years, high elves an average of 700 years and giants of 1000 years. Of course that's the average lifespan of those who die from old age. Much like humans, most fairies die from conflicts, accidents, or diseases before reaching old age.
Ecology and Habitats
Fairies live in environments with lush vegetation, like forests, or grasslands. Those environments could be cold, warm, or temperate.
Biological Cycle
Fairies are affected greatly by magic. Magic in turn, is affected by the seasons, the phases of the moon and the positions of celestial bodies. As a result, environmental factors determine most actions of every fae society. For example magic is stronger during a full moon than during a new moon and at its strongest during an eclipse. When magic is stronger, fae battlemages are better at fighting, magic rituals are more effective and objects that are created with magic work better.
The fairies have three great celebrations that correspond with the days of strong magic. The night of the full moon, the solstice, and the most important of all the day of the eclipse.
Additional Information
Social Structure
Fairies have a caste system where the different types of fairy have different roles. Unlike humans who can move up and down in their social hierarchy, fairies never leave the caste they were born in.
The fae hierarchy is as follows. Giants are at the top. They are the divine rulers of the fairies and their authority is unquestionable. Below the giants are the high elves. They are the warriors, hunters, priests and healers. Below those are the lesser elves. These are workers, farmers, and servants to the higher castes. At the bottom of the hierarchy are the pixies, which are basically drones. Because of their ability to fly and their tiny size, they used as messengers, as aerial soldiers, and for putting up displays in celebrations.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Fairies are native to the Southern continent but can also be found in the Northern continent in equally large numbers. They are absent from the island of Simiria and from most of the Midean sea.
Civilization and Culture
Average Technological Level
It is hard to measure the technological level of the fairies. Their great use on magic has lead them ahead in certain branches but has also kept them behind in others.
The pixies for example are created artificially (through magic) to perform tasks similar to a drone. They can be seen as an example of genetically engineered beings, or as biological machines. Also the use of alchemy has allowed the fae to create unique materials with strange properties, the same way molecular chemistry of our world has done for us.
On the other hand, fairies don't have things like aqueducts or sewage systems. A fairy will not get tired if they try to purify every gram of water they need, like a human would. So they don't have to build large infrastructure that moves water. Fairies are also behind humans in medicine because they prefer the use of healing spells.
Common Taboos
The fae hierarchy is sacred for the fairies. The roles of each caste have been determined by the gods themselves. To disobey orders from a memeber of a higher caste, especially from a giant is viewed as blasphemy.
History
The first fairies were created 200000 years ago by the goddess Eller, who was disappointed by her previous creation (the monkeys) because they didn't worship her. Although fairies were created at the same time as humans, they developed civilization a lot earlier. 40000 years ago they discovered agriculture and built the first cities.
After a series of wars against the declining monkey civilization, those cities conquered enough territory to emerge as great empires. Those are the Kishi Empire in the Northern Continent, and the Uruwi Empire in the Southern Continent, which remain the two biggest empires to this day.
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
Fairies view themselves as better than other species. They know their not the smartest or the most powerful species, but they believe they are the most civilized. Their interactions with other species are sometimes peaceful and sometimes hostile (like most species and civilisations in any universe.
Many fairy nations have a rivalry with the Allotopians (intelligent birds that inhabit the floating island of Allotopia). The reason for that is that most fairies envy the beauty of the floating island and make attempts to conquer it.
