Personal history
Early Years
Vannain was born to Malvina Blesk, daughter of a famous mage scientist who was responsible for designing tools of war. Vannain's father, Vannuil, had a fleeting relationship with her while she was in college. Vannain was born only a few years into The Glass War, around the time his father vanished. Malvina was shamed for having a child out of wedlock and dropping out of school. Her father gave her a house in the remote city of Lillilev, where she was to live alone with her shame. For some time, they had a somewhat normal life together. Vannain went to school, had friends. He and his mother frequented the Chapel. She was good to him, but her heart was bitter. Malvina both needed and resented her child. She refused to be alone, yet blamed her child for her lonesomeness. When Vannain showed signs of magic, Malvina withdrew him from school and his him away from his friends. His only outings, his only place of peace was going to Chapel. His mother kept his magic a secret. Magic was the only thing to really spark joy for Vannain, even if his mother villainized it. He was truly talented, understanding and making his own spells at a young age. He would practice in secret to the best of his ability, but sometimes his mother would catch him, and punish him accordingly. She was always afraid someone would see, even if they were alone and shut away from the world. Around age 11, Vannain started "to become more like Vannuil," which made Malvina feel threatened that her child would leave her too. She started to resent Vannain more, while also wanting him to stay even more. Her actions culminated to an event when Vannain turned 16. After another fight over magic, Vannain made a heated but false threat to leave. In a panic at the mere thought, Malvina struck him in the head with a nearby vase. From that moment on, Vannain had a difficult time understanding magic. It was as if all the connection was lost. It was like suddenly not understanding how to write, how to read. The years of his mother's teachings seeped in: his suffering was because of his corrupted, magic-touched soul.A New Life
Vannain and Malvina did not get better from that point on. In fact, things got so bad, that the chapel they attended started to take notice. Malvina was frustrated things did not get to "normal" after the incident. Vannain was still trying to use magic. She noticed that chapel was the only thing that he really looked forward to, so she started to keep him from going. He truly thought he was going to be damned during this time. The Chapel, however, decided to step in. Malvina began to panic, and accused Vannain of "lying" to the priests about what happened to him. He did not, but his wounds and absences were alarming. Knowing fully well that his friends were in Lillilev, that Chapel was all he looked forward to, Malvina made a hasty, last ditch punishment over her son. In her angry state of mind, sending Vannain away was the best punishment she could think of, and sending him off on her own terms was better than anything else. Malvina contacted an old friend from her school days, someone she thought would teach sense into her son. Ariana Kostenko had served in the war, had a reputation for being tough, and was now a Chapel Mother in Sutrin, far from everything Vannain cared about. She accepted Malvina's proposal to "fix" Vannain. Within a couple weeks, she sent for the boy and he was in a different town. Vannain anticipated the worst, given his mother's description of the Paladin Mother. But to his surprise, she was actually very kind to him, only accepting Malvina's proposal because she wanted to truly help. She knew what Malvina was like, knew what Vannuil had done to them. It was a special case for her. From then on, Vannain lived there, attended Chapel, though he struggled to connect with anyone again. His wounds were healed by the Clerics, and for the first time he had an interest in them. Inspired by the clerics of the chapel, Vannain wished to become one as well. He began his training to reignite his magic, to serve the Order in repentance. He devoted his life to Sol and the prophetess, humbled by the kindness Ariana showed him. He became a novice, an errand boy for the chapel sisters and brothers. At night, he would pray for his magic to return, or a sign from Martalia telling him what to do.Father
One day, Seer Rasmus made a surprise visit to the Sutrin Chapel, claiming he wanted to see the good work his people did. There, he shook Vannain's hand and read his Fate Lines. He revealed that Vannain would receive a sign from the goddess, and be called to a journey that would test him, but lead him to what he desired most. Receiving a mysterious letter from his father asking for help, Vannain saw that as the divine sign. Despite Ariana's warnings, she decides to accompany him on his journey./*this letter was actually sent by the order in an attempt to lure out Vannuil*/
