The FourSpace Inhabitants

Since its invention, the FourDrive has been the sole method of faster-than-light travel across Known Space and beyond. Its use is commonplace, with most systems of a significant population seeing dozens of translations annually, not only to transport goods and people, but also to carry messages (FtL communications has yet to be invented, if it's even possible). With so many journeys in and out of the strange dimension known as FourSpace, it is not surprising that travellers sometimes come back with tales. The most prolific and coherant is that of creatures that inhabit the fourth spacial dimension.

Summary

"I've seen 'em, the things in FourSpace. We was on a trip a few years back, supposed to be a instant jump, ended up taking three weeks. People got edgy, bit spooked. I was working on the vent system of our ship, you know you want those things to work flawlessly, especially when you're caught in Fourspace. Anyway, was up there on my own, working on the Outside, even though regs say you ain't supposed to during transit. I dropped my wrench, forgot to tie it on, you know how it gets sometimes. Anyway, I look around for it, and it was there. Other side of the field. Big, and wobbly. Hard to concentrate on, like the rest of the scenery in that place, makes your head hurt if you stare. First thought, it was just some more of the weird shit you see in there, but no, it moved. Like, hard to describe how. Not in a line, like, from one place to another without being in the middle?   Anyway. It's what I saw, and I know others have seen it too."

Spread

Current scientific thinking states that if life did exist within FourSpace, it would be so drastically removed from human comprehension that people would probably not even recognise it as life, even if they saw it. The geometries of the fourth spacial dimension are just too difficult for a three-dimensional being to envisage. Despite this, many individuals, some with otherwise impeccable records of honesty and integrity, have claimed to detect living beings within this convoluted and complex environment.   The manner of detection is not always consistent; some claim to have picked up radio signals whilst listening during transit, some claim to have seen shapes on the radar or lidar (despite the stated impossibility), others claim to have seen them visually, through windows or even on the vessel itself. The vast number of recorded sightings cannot be ignored, but the lack of consistency regarding detections does not lend itself to validity.
