Black hole power generator

After the Great Expansion pushed the boundaries of human occupied space outwards, but before the Amnesiac Virus devastated civilisation, was a time of remarkable technological progress, fueled by the endless creativity of AI and the human species freed from the restrictions of working for a living. One of the most impressive examples of human ingenuity was the black hole power generator, or BHPG.
Only one appears to have ever been created, and whether this was because the Amnesiac Viral event happened too soon after its invention, preventing its further use, or if the ancients deemed it not viable enough for mass usage, no one now knows. All factions are desperate to uncover the secrets of this technology, but it is currently on the neutral space station known as The Pit Edge, and its secrets are jealously guarded.

History

Built at some point between the Great Expansion and the Amnesiac Virus event, it was almost entirely depopulated after that. It took almost a thousand years to recolonise the station and re-learn most of its secrets, at which point both the Northup Alliance and the Federation of Xah had shown an interest in taking over The Pit Edge and getting its secrets. Thankfully, one of the first projects undertaken by its inhabitants was the activation of the BHPG, and using its power to operate a particle beam of incredible range and power; something the Federation discovered when a fleet of four FourDrive carriers were destroyed as soon as they arrived in system.
With its independence assured, the Pit Edge continued its research and opened up as a neutral port, allowing all non-military people free access to most of the station. The BHPG remained its most closely guarded secret though, and so far, none have managed to uncover it.

Significance

As only one working example of a BHPG exists, its significance cannot be overstated. The discoveries of the research teams at The Pit Edge are never revealed, but it is hoped by both the Northup Alliance and the Federation of Xah that the secrets of how to generate power from a black hole will eventually be uncovered.
