The Epic of Artrex

A myth in the Izaric tradition, as well as the folklore of Antioch, this tale speaks of the rise St. Artrex and his defeat of the Lastrogian Giants.

Summary

The tale recounts a time when Antioch was overrun with Giants that plagued her people. It was said that these Giants - the Lastrogians - were half-Demon offspring, sent by the Lord of Hell to destroy the gods' chosen people.    Searching for salvation, the King of Antioch went to his oracles. He asked them if they could use their powers of foresight to tell him where he could find a weapon to fight the Lastrogians. Their reply was that he would not find a weapon, but a man. The third son of a blacksmith, born of no mother, with hair and eyes of two shades would be the salvation of his people. The King was skeptical, asking the Oracles to explain how a boy could be born of no mother. The oracles stated that it was his riddle to unravel. The King was vexed, but nonetheless grateful to finally have a solution to the plight of his people.   The next day, the King sent his agents in search of every blacksmith in the land. They searched and searched, but a boy "born of no mother" was hard to find. After three months, the King was ready to abandon his search. Yet, it was then that a young man, Artrex, was brought to him. A remarkable warrior, able to create a sacred bow from the very light of the sun, Artrex seemed the prime candidate for the answer to the riddle of the oracles. The King offered Artrex his finest armor, but the boy refused. He said that the heavens would watch over him.   With his bow in hand, Artrex challenged the Lastrogians to fight. Rather than fight him as an army, the Lastrogians sought to mock the boy by saying that only one of them was needed to turn him to paste. He accepted this challenge, slaying the Giant with a single shot. The Lastrogians were shocked, but unshaken, sending another to fight him. That one, he killed as well. They sent another and another, each one falling at his feet. In the end, there were none willing to fight him. For their defeat, Artrex commanded them to walk into the sea and never return.
