The Abyss

For as long as mortal man has tread Ethrenal the Abyss has loomed, like a scar on the otherwise beautiful planets surface. No sane man would dare tread near its borders, the purplish-black oozing and pulsing landscapes, a powerful stench of death and decay and the horrid monstrosities that pour out from its dark, gaping maw are all reasons enough to stay far away. For those brave enough to enter they will find themselves in an endless maze of branching tunnels and cave systems that descend deep into the planets core, it does not take long for the light to be snuffed out from the entrance. Each step is a mixture of sickly squishing as boots meet the fleshy mass that sprawls althroughout the Abyss with the crunch of bones and the occasional patch of stone. Around each and every corner lies a new horror, born of malice and with an unending hunger, seeking to rip the life out of anything that comes into its home and the adventurers that have set foot into this hellscape must return this tenfold for even the slightest wound can spell death. The Abyss is home to the Selhenthraphrax and the disease it brings, whose very name strikes fear in the eyes of mortal man, Abyssrot; a plague that ravages the body, causing incredible pain and if not treated soon after infection, results in the loss of large portions of the body and, in the worse case, death. But if there were such a party brave enough to find themselves in the far depths of the Abyss, they may yet find the most horrifying creature of all, the Abyss Matriarch, a vile creature whose sole purpose is to birth countless monstrosities to be released upon the world, though if such a creature could be slain it would certainly make a remarkable blow in the forces of the Abyss. The reward for such acts of heroism is temporary relief from the swarms of creatures, the valor and glory that comes with being a hero and of course the creation of new Abyss Matriarches and Abyss creatures replacing the swarms that were just slain.
