Flaw

Characters

A flaw is not the character's fault, but it is something they have to deal with
Flaws are probably the one thing that is found in every creature. In storytelling, it is what keeps your protagonist from achieving their goals

It helps expand on a character - be it through why they have such flaw, what are their thoughts on it and how others treat them for it are some ways to explore this condition

What is a Flaw?

A flaw is something that limits the character in the "Ordinary World" of the Hero's Journey. This flaw is something they will have to overcome in the course of the story. Unless, of course, it's a tragedy. Flaws and fears in the beginning of the story foreshadow and contribute to the middle's crisis. The protagonist's fears, flaws and strengths make them believable and represent challenges they must overcome in order to transform.
The progression of the character's internal flaw or character emotional development plot revolves around external action...The protagonist's internal conflict or fatal flaw reveals what they need to achieve internally in order to reach the goal of the primary plot. The resolution of the primary plot is dependent upon the resolution of the internal subplot
...
You begin a story with a character in possession of a flaw, a fault, a hang-up, or a prejudice. You give them the rest of a story to get over their weaknesses. A comparison of the character from the beginning with the one at the end shows whether they fail to overcome their flaw or succeeds at getting over their hang-up

Examples of flaws
  • Reckless
  • Coward
  • Over-confident
  • Paralyzed by fear
  • Stubborn
What about tragedies?
Tragedies are not your everyday story - as the name suggests, the ending isn't a happy one - it's bittersweet at best, and this ending is caused by the MC's flaw

Grateful for the knowledge, and excited to put it to practice. Got me thinking about plenty of other characters who's many flaws make them worth loving.

As a reader, I don't hate "perfect" characters. I just don't pay much attention to them. No arc to follow, right?   I enjoy a character who faces their flaws. Some can be fixed, some are always be there, and the character won't always overcome them. I cannot express how I love when the character finds a way to use that flaw on somebody else (or the world, or their goal) benefit.   But don't try to convince me that a good guy is still good if, knowing that their flaws hurt others, does nothing to try and be better. Realistic? Very. Still the protagonist? It happens, I guess (I often like secondary characters more anyway). But likable because of how realistic they are? Not to me, thank you very much.   As a writer... I often try (and fail) to write the story that I want to read.

Agreed! I believe flaws make characters more interesting. As a reader, it keeps me wondering how it's going to affect the plot; as a writer, it gives me an opportunity to write my favourite thing: corruption arcs!   Thanks for leaving a comment - I agree with the points you've made and it's always interesting to hear what others think (:
