The Bloodtree Tapestry

It seems as if there isn't a soul alive who hasn't heard of the Bloodtree Tapestry. Whether a troll lives behind syndicate walls, or finds themself as a member of Wrend's most reclusive caravan, they have heard tales. They do vary wildly between communities; who has it, where it came from, what it even looks like. However, they all agree one one thing, it tells what happened before.

Summary

Over five hundred years ago, trolls were united in both goal and fear. Survival. They traveled together in one great caravan, following the Umbra as it slowly moved across Wrend. This was before they understood Daybreak and believed the rising suns were world-eating lizards nipping at their heels. It was a time before knowledge, before the discovery of the Umbra Axiom, where the trolls were at complete mercy of the land they lived on. Such a dangerous and taxing life left little room for art or science, but they did carry with them an ever growing tapestry of colors, beauty, and an ancient understanding that became a deadly burden.   Many believe the great caravan carried with them a massive tapestry that tells the story of how the trolls arrived at such a chaotic point. It was a unifying object that represented hope, and strength to the people who carried it. Descriptions vary but they all feature a central image of a tree or branches, and connections between them to signify children or a lifelong bond.   The exact information it holds is unknown, but theories are spread widely. Some believe it's prophetic, telling the future rather than the past, and others think it holds secrets the Syndicate has hidden away that would give away how they gained their power.

Historical Basis

The Book of Masses claims to be the first written record in all of troll history. It was created alongside the early rise of The New Harvest Syndicate, the purveyors of the written word. However, there are passages in the book that refer to massive ornate images and stories made of thread. Many see this as solid proof of the Bloodtree Tapestry. Educators claim these passages are referring to early cultural practice of textile weaving, and claims of these tapestries holding any kind of history to them is purely from a cultural standpoint, and not because it is a written account of history.   The New Harvest Syndicate stands firm in their conviction that there was no written word before they created it.   The Bloodtree Tapestry is still likely to have existed, but its relevance is completely up to speculation. Many, however, find the idea of a hidden history mundane or even irrelevant. Caravaners proclaiming its burning may actually be unintentionally referencing the burning of rival caravan's wares during the Merchant Wars.   Despite attempts, no pre-Syndicate manuscripts have ever been recovered. If the Bloodtree Tapestry still exists it certainly would give insight into a time before Syndicate rule.

Variations & Mutation

Caravaners believe the burning of the Bloodtree Tapestry is what dissolved the original great caravan. Even today, many traditional caravans have tapestries with names sewn into sprawling fabric branches, that are protected along with the most prized possessions of that caravan. They believe if their Bloodtree is taken or destroyed, the caravan must be dissolved.
