Royavor: Dad-Fight

Execution

The son leaves the father's house and goes to the village or city square. He announces loudly, "I will surpass my father in this way:" The son would then state a manner of competition, and the area which that competition would signify. Examples are "strength, by way of wrestling," or "strategy, by way of Tales of the Nine," and "swiftness and endurance, by way of a race to Yattau." The son may choose any feat of skill, though speed and strength are often favorites in Tuhra. The son raises some manner of signifier (a banner, a flag, or perhaps even a pole or some cloth) and marches off to the house of his parents. Anyone in the village or city square who is interested can follow as a witness.

The father is usually well aware of the challenge beforehand; he is socially expected both to prepare for it and to guide his son towards making a statement. The father is expected to meet him at the doorway; else-wise, the witnesses are licensed by society to barge in and drag him out. If the father refuses to come out and cannot be dragged out, the son wins his challenge by default. If the father stands outside the doorway, the challenge is accepted and enacted. The father calls his neighbors and family, who also stand as witnesses.

Both father and son are expected to give their all in the competition, and the witnesses hold them to that. The competition is supposed to have a clear winner, but the witnesses can determine a winner where none are distinguished. If the son wins, he is declared an independent man, albeit homeless, with all the rights, privileges, and freedoms of a Tuhran citizen. If the father wins, the son must show visual and/or auditory submission to his father. It is then the father's decision to grant his son his autonomy.
