Krokroi: Giant's Vision

Causes

While the height of the Kauaru has been generally bred out, the mental hardwiring from the Kauaru lingers in some aspects of genetic code. So, while the conscious mind of a Kauaru descendant recognizes her normal height, her subconscious acts as if she is twice, perhaps four times her standard height.

Symptoms

Subjects look down at the ground almost constantly as they walk. Subjects are often diagnosed with farsightedness. People who find themselves associating with small creatures, such as insects or smaller mammals, often have Krokroi. Often pet owners are placed under suspicion.

Treatment

The original treatment, once this phenomenon was discovered, was to place the patient in situations that would diminish her height, forcing her mind to input a new stature and cancel out the subconscious notions. For example, patients were given shorter chairs at tables, and relatives were encouraged to walk in tall shoes. This had the effect of a bandaid on a dismembered arm. While the patient input the new stature, the conscious mind had already recognized the problem and was attempting to fix it. The subconscious continued. Eventually, more subtler methods were introduced, such as the increased smell and presence of low-growing flowers. This hacked into the subconscious more effectively, but would have to be applied on a regular basis to work. Ultimately, psychologists developed a hearing device that made reflective sounds seem closer, to considerably improved results.

Prognosis

As the conscious battled the subconscious, patients were often driven insane. Desires to squat, or conversely to climb on ladders, were commonplace. Doctors forbade patients from mountain climbing or any form of frontier hiking. Legs would shake as a matter of neural stimulus as opposed to a physical condition, as the subconscious imagines the height of the body and the frailty of its support. If the conscious loses the battle, subjects often tend toward aggression and emotional manipulation.
