Sixpoints

Sixpoints is the largest city on the continent of Volkyr and the de facto, though not official, capital of the Fountain Dominion. Named for the six large lava fountains within the city walls, Sixpoints is divided into two groupings of districts, dubbed the outer districts and inner districts. Sixpoints' architecture is betrays its Tiefling founding, though human and elven builders, and in later centuries dwarven, gnome, and others, have all left their mark on the city.   Sixpoints is a major multicultural hub and intellectual center, not only in the Fountain Dominion but in all of Volkyr. However, the recent rise and reign of Severian the High Sentinel has put a heavy strain on the city. Bread and labour riots among the commoners have become common. A breakdown of rights has led to a heavy military presence within the city, led by the Border Sentinels, who are known to question and arrest citizens so often that the act of disappearing suddenly has gained the term, "shadowed by the Sentinels," often abbreviated to just, "shadowed."   Nowadays, most of the inner districts of Sixpoints have come under direct military occupation and control, and while relatively free of crime, the civilians, most of who are wealthy merchants or nobles of the senatorial class, chafe under the oppressive gaze of the Sentinels. Meanwhile, the outer districts have become rife with crime, starvation, and desperation. The High Sentinel ignores his commoner subjects, sending the Border Sentinels only to quell any organized uprising.

Ruler

Historically, Sixpoints has been ruled by a mayor, appointed by the ruling Senate of the Fountain Dominion. This mayor was responsible for forming the city council, consisting of a head of the city watch, as well as a selected council of advisors, such as a Trade Advisor, Foreign Advisor, Grain & Farms advisor, and others that have risen and fallen throughout history.   However, the rise of Severian the High Sentinel has left the office of Mayor of Sixpoints vacant for decades. Instead, a Lieutenant from with the Border Sentinels has managed the city, appointed by Severian and his high command to manage the affairs of the city, which are ever changing and only suited to the interests of High Sentinel Severian.   While Severian manages his empire from the Grand Eye of Sixpoints, the city is managed from the former Mayoral palace. Border Sentinels serving as senators also participate in management of the city, but final decision-making rests with the Lieutenant, who reports directly to Severian.

Notable Traits

The Six Points: Lava Fountains

Sixpoints is of course named for the Six Lava Lava Fountains that surround the city. Each built into the walls of the city itself, they are named for the three virtues and three vices that, according to legend, were the motivations behind the founding of the city: Dread, Inclusion, Lust, Love, Despair, and Temerity. Each of the lava fountains is maintained by the Hundred Feet, a local religious order of silent monks.

The Inner Districts

The walls of Sixpoints are organized in such a way that the city is sectioned off into different districts. The districts most central to the city, and protected by the most walls, are known as the Inner Districts. There are six inner districts:   The District of the Bells - Contains the Chamber of Bells, wherein the Senate will meet in what has, under the dictatorial control of Severian, become a mostly ceremonial venture. This district is also home to many high end shops and traders, who peddle their wares to the Senators as they meet and leave different meetings   The District of the Grand Eye - Formerly called the District of the Senses, the new name reflects the district's most recent construction: the Grand Eye of Sixpoints, a newly built monstrosity that towers at five times the size of the next largest building in the city. It's gigantic pale eye made of marble looks out in all directions, slowly turning. Nobody is sure if this eye is some form of ceremonial, harmless magic, or if the eye truly does look out upon Severian's lands, searching for rebels and insurrectionists.   The District of the Estates - Where the richest and most important and influential members of the Fountain Dominion reside, the District of the Estates is a flat, mostly grass or parkland, with beautiful two and three story homes built among small, rolling hills. Artificial streams bring a sense of calm and relaxation to residents, doubly so by the extra gates and walls constructed within this community to protect them from the rabble of the rest of the city.   The District of Metals - Once a central district for mining and smithing, over time this district has seen the miners and smithies replaced by bankers, tailors, and art merchants. The finest raiment, and most beautiful and prized works of art, move through the District of Metals. The richest of all the denizens of Volkyr keep their money within the vaults of the many banks within this district, each of which employs their own small security forces to ensure the protection of their clients' money.   The District of the Rivers - A religious district which contains a thousand temples to a thousand different aspects of the Animus. Curiously, it is also the headquarters and founding location of the Tail Eaters, an order of warrior monks. The District of the Rivers is known for the large river that runs through the center of the district, in which religious services are often performed for nobles who hold to the old Animus Faiths of the Omukade.   The District of the Blood - once upon a time, this district was known for its brothels and gambling dens. The torches burned day in night in the District of Blood, and the discerning wealthy noble could participate in one of thousands of carnal pleasures the district offered. Now, no more, as the Border Sentinels have cleared the district of all that rabble in favor of making the district their headquarters and home. Nowadays, the same debaucheries take place, but only for the Border Sentinels, who pay a pittance of what performers used to make, and abuse their privileges and powers at every opportunity. Among the more enlightened of Sixpoints, it is whispered that the District of Blood has become the most dangerous district in the city for a commoner.

The Outer Districts

Though smaller, the four outer districts are also densely packed, and are far and away the most populated areas of Sixpoints. No planning went into these districts; they grew organically as more and more moved to the city over the centuries.   Rat Creek - Named for the runoff waters from the artificial rivers and streams in the inner districts, the marginally clean leaking water helped an entire district of slums and mud huts grow around it.   Elven Row - Thousands of years ago, a great migration of wood elves and high elves to the city helped create this district. The architecture from these cultures influences the look and feel of this district, though it is also now home to the most criminal gangs.   Dargal's Heap - Many years ago, a disgraced senator was banished from Sixpoints and told never to return, for his name was forever tarnished in the city. But that man did not leave, instead proclaiming that, if his name was tarnished, he'd assume a new one, and form his own city. So began Dargal's Heap, named for the man who paid his own money to encourage whole villages of dwarves, half-orcs, drow, and gnomes to relocate from the mountains of the Omukade to "his," new district. While Dargal himself disappeared into anonymity, murdered by a prostitute with a scythe, the influence of the populations that he paid to move here remain, and the district still unofficially carries his name, though it has been made to be an insult.   The Sewages - The waste of the city must flow somewhere, and around that somewhere grew the district known simply as the Sewages. The Sewages are the worst of the worst, a stinking cesspool of starving and desperate folk.
