Alestead

Population: 2,400

Geography

Alestead encompasses some of the most fertile land in all of Rema. It is nestled amidst miles of rolling hills, making it a beautiful town to behold. With dozens of farms flourishing with hops, tobacco and varying colors of vegetable, Alestead is well stocked with food, spirits, and other natural goods. The Three Cousins lakes keep the town supplied with numerous species of freshwater fish for protein, and there are more then a couple farms that raise cattle. Relied upon to supply the nearby cities of Brockwell, Port Oren and Quares with fresh food and beverage, most of the citizens of Alestead are farmers.

Government:

The Caucus of Ale's:

There are 28 recognized members of the Caucus of Ale's, with 4 holding positions of leadership. Each member of the Caucus is required to own farmland and new farm owners can petition to join the Caucus of Ale's at any weekly meetings. Meetings are usually held during the evening hours of the Day of the Animas, at the Alestead Tavern and Inn.

Caucus of Ale's Leadership:

There are 4 recognized positions of leadership in the Caucus of Ale's; the beast master, the peace keeper, the law enforcer, and the town manager. Elections are held every 2 years to determine the leadership of the Caucus of Ale's. The entire town is able to participate, though it has long been rumored that only the votes cast by Caucus members are counted. Elections are held the first Day of the Animas during the Wane-Volnus.

The Beast Master:   Those who hold the Beast Master position are required to dispatch of creatures who threaten or devour livestock from any Alestead farms. Though there have been Beast Masters who have taken care of these problems themselves, the present Beast Mast, Sir Arron Browdy, prefers to outsource these jobs to paid mercenaries. If no mercenaries can be bought, he has been known to seek out the assistance of the town crime watch.   The Peace Keeper:   The elected Peace Keeper is responsible for hearing the concerns of the public and bringing them to the attention of the Caucus of Ales. If a concern is unable to be handled locally, the Peace Keeper will be responsible for traveling to Brockwell to speak with Lord Brockwell. Tradition dictates that The Peace Keeper should be available at all hours of the day to hear the concerns of the people. However the current Peace Keeper, Sir Edgar Karhart, keeps a schedule of his own.
Requests to meet with the Peace Keeper should be made on paper and at least 10 days in advance. Meetings will take place at either the Peace Keepers home, requestee's home, or the Alestead Tavern & Inn depending on Peace Keepers preference.
-Alestead Charter Amendment 33, Section 2, Clause 2.   The Law Enforcer:   Those assigned the position of Law Enforcer are responsible for settling civil and criminal disputes, as well as administering justice when required. Alestead does not condone capitol punishment, but those looking to commit egregious acts should not view that as a free pass to terrorize the town. Criminals who meet the kingdoms standards for capitol punishment have a good chance of being sent to the City of Brockwell to face justice. Sir Janey Longbrooke is the current Law Enforcer of Alestead and has a high approval rating amongst its residence. Leading a group of local farmers, moderately trained in combat, she patrols the streets for public disturbances and administers justice quickly and fairly.   The Town Manager:   A glorified receptionist, the town manager does little more then direct concerns to the proper party and manage the decorum of Caucus meetings. Considered to be a cushy job that wastes taxpayers money, the current Town Manager is working hard to change this public opinion. Sir Marcus Stanton manages the meetings, in addition to recording them. In an effort to keep the town educated, Stanton personally funds a weekly newsletter that he hand delivers to the residents of Alestead the day after each Caucus Meeting.

Defense:

The elected Law Enforcer is responsible for training and leading the small band of locals who make up the towns crime watch, colloquially known as Janey's Keggers. Funded by the taxes collected by the Caucus of Ale's, The Janey's Keggers' force of 41 officers, maintain the peace and daily protection of the city.   A mostly peaceful town, there has been little need for a trained military force. Though the land encompassing Alestead is quite fertile, few have desired to take the land for their own. The few times in history when a military force was required to protect the citizens of Alestead, the Grainwood Military could be counted on to come to their aid. A two days ride from Brockwell, the military is always available to offer help when it is needed.   Janey's Keggers   Though many Alesteader's agree that the town has been safer under Janey Longbrooke's enforcement, there have been a few negative side effects. Though Alestead is first and foremost a spirits producing town, the Keggers' have dried up the local taverns on more then one occasion.

Commerce:

The farms of Alestead supply the nearby cities with food and spirits, so farmland and brewing supplies are always available. One can expect to find most basic goods that they may require, but if one is looking for something rare and expensive, Alestead is probably not the place to find it. Many travel to the town annually for the Alestead Uncorking Festival, and this is considered to be the most busy time of year for the small town. Merchants from across Rema come to celebrate the years bounty, and one can never know what to expect from these pop-up shops. The town square is often full on the weekends as farmers and traveling merchants set up temporary kiosks to sell their wares. There are a number of stores in the town proper where basic goods can be purchased, but if you are searching for more exotic goods, then the Town Square Marketplace may be your best option.

Town Square Marketplace

Every weekend, during the Day of the Sun and the Day of the Moon, local and traveling merchants set up temporary kiosks around the Town Square. There is usually a platform set up where hopeful bards can sign up to perform, and a station where kids can get their faces painted and make some crafts. There are a handful of kiosks that can be relied upon to make an appearance at the Town Square Marketplace every weekend, while others may just be set up for the day as they pass through town. These merchants have a variety of goods that can range from common to rare. On an average weekend, there will be 1-2 traveling merchants set up at the Marketplace. During town festivals, there may be a 1-2 more.
