The Forever Winter

The seas boiled. The continents cracked. Magma, the lifeblood of Weirth, burst forth in torrents. Great, dark banks of clouds and ash blocked out the sun and a terrible winter descended upon Weirth. A winter that lasted for generations. The damage to the land and sea lasted even longer, for it was this Forever Winter that brought the Ashen Worm Yikkarth and great Cthulhu.   The pitiful survivors of the war were no match for Yikkarth and its followers. Yikkarth descended upon the northern pole of the world and tore it loose in a catastrophic attempt to rend the world utterly. Cthulhu built a temple city on the island of Atlantis, called R’lyeh. The Elves sacrificed their servants to Cthulhu by the thousands! The seas around Atlantis grew red with blood.   Luckily the Pnakotic Masters, Arch-Voorsteh that had gone into meditation centuries before, were awakened. They were able to contain and ensorcel the Ashen Worm and trap it in a pocket dimension, along with the massive chunk of Weirth that had broken free.   The Harrowing of Weirth   With this counterstroke came the Harrowing. The seas rolled over the land. The temple city of R’lyeh sank beneath the waves, carrying Cthulhu to the depths, where he sleeps unto this day.   Every race of Weirth struggled for survival. Most magical knowledge was lost, and what little remained was devoted to protection and sustenance. Only three Towers of Silence remained standing, in what were to become Saringa, Jamul and Xongu, where life’s continuance was precarious but much knowledge was saved.   Small groups of survivors banded together for survival in the remnants of the cities or rural conclaves. Many underground facilities were constructed to protect what they could of populations and their cultures from the glaciation.
