Addicted
Some things make life worth living, and others make death worth wishing for. Some behaviours and substances sell the future for a brief respite of the present pain. This is addiction.
"Addiction begins when a self-destructive behaviour becomes about escaping a negative rather than pursuing a positive. It never ends well."
Causes
When your body is overcome with the effects of a substance/action, it eventually stops producing those effects, starting an addiction. If you're gambling to the extent that your body stops producing the hormones that gambling gives, you are an addict; avoiding the negatives of withdrawl instead of chasing the highs of a vice.
Symptoms
An addiction will make you less able to function in a normal life. Your existence becomes about feeding the beast.
Treatment
Addiction is doing whatever it takes to avoid the abyss. The cure is the abyss.
Avoiding your addiction for long enough for your body to recalibrate is the way out. The only way out is through.
Cultural Reception
Society generally looks down an addict, unless you're useful to them. Celebrities and politicians need not worry. In fact, being addicted makes you easier to control, which is attractive for a politicians.
