Imperial Hold of Slagmill

Deep within the glacier cracked canyons of the Trenten Mountains lies a Keep of Metal and Stone. The screams of the damned and abandoned echo through the valley. drowned only in the dying wails of those foolish enough to try and escape. Those cursed souls left to wander its halls are subjected to all manor of horrid realities, the guards ensuring each terrible punishment is carried out. The less said of the Commanders running that evil place the better.  -Imperial Surveyor Nihouke of Fallenfer
Founded during the first expansionary war against the Southern Desert and its various peoples, Slagmill Hold is considered the worst Imperial Military Keep that the Empire of Five Kings has ever created. The extent of treatment within the Hold is regulated quite sternly, it is unfortunate that the treatment is designed to drive its prisoners insane.

Purpose / Function

The original purpose of Slagmill was far less nefarious than its eventual role as a specialized prison for the Empires most hated.
The Founder of Slagmill was an Imperial Commander, Knight Officer, and Decorated Arcane Engineer. His contributions, and more importantly his assistance with Arcane Engineer Zunrase of Bloodwick in the development of some of the founding principles of Ethereal Energies inner workings. Imperial Knight Officer Sir Subisun Bauhenta of Swiftglow, Division Commander of the Second Knight Officer Infantry Division. Under his direction the Keep was founded to further the studies of Arcane experimentations, specifically being designed to help contain the Ethereal Energy flowing through and from individuals within.  During his years of research, both in the lab and in the field, Sir Subisun was able to find a uses for the more abstract abilities of the Arcane Arts. Zunrase, Subisun, and a myriad of other researchers assigned magic a three category system. They created the formations of Physical, Mental, and Abstract as currently understood. This accomplishment was largely credited to the Arcane Consortium and their dedications to the constant study of magic, a concession between the Empire of Five Kings and the Consortium leadership.
Sir Subisuns' discoveries in the confines of Slagmill would later go on to usher in a new wave of Abstract Understanding. The constrictions of the Three aspects still largely unknown, the Abstract field was even more unknown. Aspects of whatever "Abstract" magic was were present in almost all forms of daily life, the constant low levels of surrounding energy bleeding into everything and everyone was the largest example. Under Sir Subisun and Dame Zunrase (knighted years before their joining at Slagmill, but after their work on Arcane Theory) careful eye, the facets of Abstract magic were becoming more clear and easier to understand.

Alterations

After Sir Subisun and Dame Zunrase passed, control of Slagmill was passed from descendant to descendant until the end of the Third Age. Viltran purchased the Title to the Keep at a reduced sum and changed the leadership, direction, and intentions of the Keep entirely. With the remaining notes on Abstract energy and a new group of researchers behind it, Slagmill was changed into a Prison for Viltrans enemies and the Empires largest threats.
The Fifth Age saw a loosening in the harshness of treatments, but the overall form and function of the Keep remained the same. With the ownership of the Keep remaining under the Empire of Five Kings military arms, the knowledge of the Keep slowly grew from small circles within the Military Command Structure.

Architecture

The largest building of the Complex is the Prison Proper, a towering expansion from the rock and cliff face. Its small windows acting as the only sources of light for its many occupants. The outer walls tower over 30ft and the various buildings are kept safe behind them.
