Troll Soup or Shish Kabob Report

General Summary

Wanesun 15th

A quick discussion on what to do with their captive ended when Elyot suggested that he leave the temple and not return. With the fey spirit making the bugbear very agreeable, it decided to take that advice and exited the room, heading south. Taking some time to bandage wounds and rest up, the Venatore barged into the next chamber, prepared for the bugbear guards they were warned about.   The bugbear bruisers were well-trained, and they hit hard. Once the two sides were engaged, the doorway to the north flew open and a huge ogre joined the fray. Its attack on Adrea would have been devastating if she hadn't raised a magical shield at the last moment. The combat turned deadly with the ogre backing up his bugbear forces. One bugbear managed to land a perfect attack on Adrea, bloodying her.   Rostam managed to push the ogre back with his eldritch blasts, which left an opening for Adrea and Balan to tackle the ogre warhulk. Unfortunately, when they got close enough, the ogre swung its flail around fiercely, Balan was able to roll with some of the blow, but Adrea was soundly struck. With the bugbears now falling to Crasokk, Elyot, and Rudy , the Venatore was able to concentrate on the ogre. Elyot's mind sliver lowered its resistance to magic, while Rostam's eldritch blast took advantage of that fact, and an incredible shot by Crasokk wounded the ogre badly. One against six never ends well, and the ogre fell quickly after his bugbears did. Not without inflicting some pain, Adrea and Balan required magical healing to continue. Rummaging through his bag of holding, Crasokk realized that he didn't have his jar of Keoghtum's Ointment. More spells spent.   After searching the rooms, they looked for the hidden door into the water temple that their former captive had told them about. Opening the hidden door they looked into a vats chamber filled with water to about a five-foot-depth. The water level was about a foot below their doorway, apparently the guards would need to jump into the water if summoned. The air was almost misty, and the impression was of a place deep underwater. Suspecting water elementals and not feeling ready to tackle a temple at this point, they closed the door and moved back to the corridor heading south.   The passage south turned into a long southern corridor with a diagonal zig-zag southeast. A doorway on the western wall led to a stairway heading down to another level before the entire passage turned east. Crasokk noted that they must be going completely around the water temple area.   Rudy was ahead of the Venatore, scouting the route when he spied a troll in an eastern side room once the passage turned north. Elyot immediately cast Melf's Meteors which encircled her head. The troll was too busy munching on something to notice the Venatore, even Balan in his plate armor was able to get closer before the battle began.   Rudy was the first to strike, poisoning the troll with her dagger while Rostam blasted it. The troll swiped into Rudy, bloodying her in its first set of attacks. Adrea called upon the powers of death and Balan smote the creature repeatedly. Severely wounded, the troll's wounds began knitting up until Elyot blasted it with one of her meteor. Quickly after, the troll stopped moving. Knowing its regenerative abilities would soon kick in, the companions threw old rags on it as it burned, making sure it was burnt enough not to regenerate.   As they fought the troll, Crasokk noticed a creature up the northern corridor, which he identified as an owlbear. With Balan quickly healing Rudy, they chose to engage the creature. Unlike typical owlbears, this creature had feathers with a metallic look of iron. When Balan engaged, the creature unfurled its feather and slashed everything around it. After it took some severe damage from Rudy and Balan, Elyot put the creature to sleep. Then they discovered that the ironfeather owlbear was a chained guardian of this location. It was emaciated, underfed, and probably kept vicious by the temple to make it a better guard. The Venatore put it to rest, but Crasokk looked at the creature and regretted their decision.
Rudy then scouted beyond the owlbear's den, he let the companions know there was a large sheet on solid bronze blocking the way north. To the south was a wide frescoed hallway leading up to the first level of the dungeon (the other companions noted a similar hallway heading down from the first level). To the east was a large spherical chamber guarded by a multi-headed creature.   Turning back to the troll room, they had spied another door on the eastern wall of the storage chamber where they fought the troll, opening that door put them in combat with a much larger troll, with bones embedded in its regenerating skin. It may have been the troll's leader, whom they were told about by their suggestible bugbear earlier, but it swung wildly on its first attack, and didn’t get a second.   Another door led east, and another troll fell quickly. The corridor east ran to a north-south corridor. Adrea recognized the multi-headed beast which was now to their north as a hydra based on the stories she had been told at the temple. She noticed that it was also chained, and surmised that it was probably starved like the owlbear.   What to do next?
