Descent to a Second Level Report

General Summary

Wanesun 14th

While the center door in the south of the Earth Temple was one of the sealed doors, two smaller doorways flanked it. The southwestern door opened onto a changing room or vestry of some type, earth robes hung from pegs and sandals were tucked under a long bench. A cabinet held padlocks and keys, large jugs of wine, and piles of dirt. Elyot methodically searched the room, finding an ivory bracelet and a bone scroll case hidden among the clutter. Behind the southeast door, another storage room with piles of dirt and stone held twelve kegs of fuel oil, but searching revealed little else.   Heading back to the chambers of the Earth Priest Romag, the Venatore rested, while also combing through and identifying the treasures they just unearthed. After a short break, they decided that the spiral stairs by the prison wing might be a less conspicuous way down to the next level of the dungeon than either of the large decorated passages.   Heading down the stairs, they came upon an intersection, with corridors heading southeast and southwest. A door located where the southeast passage turned east caught their attention, so they chose that route. The door opened up into an old storeroom or junk room, wardrobes, cabinets, armoires and chests filled the space adorned with old and tattered wall hangings. Conducting a thorough search they found all sorts of clothing and costumes, from noble finery to beggars' rags. Some of the clothing looked expensive. Rostam, who had stayed outside the room, thought he heard a thump, but after a quick search, decided it may have just been his imagination, so they decided to move on.   To the east was a fourway intersection, similar to the many found on the first level. Heading north, the passage opened up into a large chamber filled with stacks of firewood, other lumber, and several sacks of charcoal. A padlocked door on the eats wall was no barrier to Rudy , who expertly picked the lock. Inside the room was a large amount of armor and equipment. Some of the equipment showed signs of use, maybe taken from prisoners or intruders. While she detected for magic, Elyot had her familiar Paisley fly up to the first level and grab one of the padlocks from the southwest vestry. Finding nothing magical, they relocked the room so that the temple forces didn't have easy access to this equipment.   Back at the fourway intersection they headed to the door directly south of them. At the doorway, the corridor split southeast and southwest. After a quick look to check for danger, they opened the door and found the temple's cistern. The stones of the four-foot high cistern wall was covered with a slimy algae, and while the water was bitter, it was potable. Because Elyot was still concentrating on magical auras, she spotted an aura coming from the bottom of the cistern. Her mage hand wasn't strong enough to lift the object, but with Rostam's mage hand assisting, soon the thing began floating to the surface, a magical shield also covered with algae. Wiping off the shield, they saw an unrecognizable coat-of-arms, a large black boar on a field of red. Based on its craftsmanship, Balan and Rudy think it may be from one of the tribes of the Stonelands, north of Krall, who joined the original battle against the temple decades ago.   At this point, Crasokk and Adrea suggested the head back north in order to not leave any enemies behind them. At the intersection they took the eastern passage, which quickly turned north, then east again, opening into a large storage room. The stores had been scattered and ruined, containers broken and bones lying among the debris on the floor.
As they headed back, Rudy was the first to round the corner. She noted movement around the corners of the intersection before three guards in the darkness who moved to attack. The Venatore's lanterns behind them silhouetting her. Adrea came around the corner at that point and the rest of the companions heard the fighting and rushed to assist. The guards were older and grizzled, and knew what they were doing, they focused on Rudy until she dropped. By that time, Adrea took up a defensive position, allowing Balan to press the attack. Crasokk set his sights, his bow, and his hunter's mark on the guards, while Rostam's eldritch blasts and Elyot's mind sliver put the guards off balance. While the guards got in a few good strikes, they soon fell. Luckily, they defeated the guards quickly enough to save Rudy's life. But where had these human guards, prowling the dark dungeon without lanterns or torches, come from?
