Batu Island

The oldest of the islands inhabited by the Anak people. While all of them are located north of the other Mariana Islands, Batu is the furthest one.   The settlement on Batu is considered to be the Anak capital, however the whole island is off limits to strangers. All that is known comes from satellite photos and observation boats. The dangerous reefs surrounding the island serve as a deterrent to unwanted visitors, but also help protect the land from storms.   While the Anak people are generally peaceful they are very protective of their privacy. Various groups, from missionaries, through anthropologists to traders, have tried and failed to gain passage to Batu. The closest to succeed has been Julian Francis Bishop, a missionary who claimed God himself sent him to the Anak people. He attempted to swim to the shore by various means several times, always to find himself back on Isla Obsidiana with a mysterious hangover the next day. His final attempt had him gone for seven days after which he washed up on the shore with no memory of what had happened mumbling about demons and sea monsters. His state deteriorated further and he was committed to a mental institution in Manila, Philippines.   Most of the Anak children live here and on the two neighbouring islands, thought they can occasionally be spotted visiting Pasaran on Isla Obsidiana which is open to tourists.

Geography

Despite the name suggesting a bare rock, the island is in fact quite large and full of life. High cliffs rise on one side providing a nesting site for a variety of birds. On the other end a lagoon cuts into the forested area, with several smaller sandy beaches also present. Although mostly covered by dense foliage there are several grassy areas. A single stream winds from the highest peak on Batu through two large lakes and back into the ocean.

Fauna & Flora

The island seems to be devoid of larger predators. Mostly inhabited by wild birds and smaller mammals and reptiles.   At the large Anku settlement some domesticated animals like goats, sheep, cats, etc. can be found.   When it comes to the flora of the island it generally matches the flora of the other Mariana Islands.
