Invaders from the West

According to Frampian legend, the only thing that can threaten the Empire is "invaders from the west". To most Frampians, this refers to the Duchy of Aich and the threat they pose. This is part of the reason for the constant tensions with the neighboring state, though the vast empty plains between the Frampia and Aich has not seen true battle in quite some time.   The prophecy was supposedly spoken by the first empress on her deathbed. Empress Feygren had spent her entire life securing the throne and uniting Wesbury and Shifract. In her final hours she predicted that her descendants would expand her empire, but also warned of "invaders from the west". This was not the first time Feygren had predicted the future, she had repeatedly used her gifts while expanding the empire by predicting events days into the future, but this was the only prophecy she ever made of the distant future.   Historically, some Frampian emperors have claimed that the prophecy refers to invaders coming from the sea and have elected to focus their forces elsewhere, leading to periods of relative peace with the Aichs. Other Emperors, like the current one, interprets the prophecy as an excuse to attempt conquest of Aich and the other regions to the west, though without success so far.   For the common people, the phrase "coming from the west" has become a term for someone who wishes you harm. So if your neighbor warns you that the local innkeeper is "coming to you from the west", you can expect an angry woman to show up to collect on your tab. This term only covers "coming from the west", so variations like "travelling from the west" or "visiting from the west" still only indicates a direction on the map.
