Scapegoat Species in When the Curtain has fallen | World Anvil

Scapegoat

Spirits of wrath take on many forms.
Most of them are active in spreading the wrath all around them by destruction and chaos.
The scapegoat is a weird case of wrath spirit that is passive.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Scapegoats can take one of two possible forms.
The first one resembles something that looks like a human in some way, be it scarecrow, a dummy, or mannequin.
The second one looks like a completely black, frail, and defenseless creature.
Both forms are completely immobile, even if their appearance would suggest otherwise.
They gain the ability to move in the second stage of their life.

Genetics and Reproduction

As spirits, scapegoats do not reproduce.

Growth Rate & Stages

After consumption of large quantity of their prey, scapegoats metamorphose into the second stage of their life.
They get bulkier, bigger, they grow teeth, claws, and horns.
In this stage, they are aggressive and they try to feed on anything they can.
If they consume enough things of a concept other than their own, they can change into the different type of spirit.
However, if they lose all the energy they had stored in themselves without changing, they will revert to the first stage of their life.

Dietary Needs and Habits

If something alive gets close to the scapegoat, it starts to feel increasingly angrier until they lose control of themselves.
At one point, they will start attacking the scapegoat, which will fill them with even more anger.   This is the way the scapegoat feeds.
When something attacks it, the scapegoat slowly drains everything they are: their memories, personality, and skills, and starts filling them with the wrath until there is nothing else left in them, almost always leading to the cardiac arrest or major organ dysfunction.   The only way to stop the scapegoat is to destroy it, by acting against their taboo.
The affected person can also be saved if someone drags them away fast enough from scapegoats' area of influence.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Their first form lacks any form of perceiving surrounding it world.
They just lie, waiting for their prey to come for them.   After metamorphosing into the second stage of their life, their ability to perceive their surrounding is similar to that of the wolf.
Additionally, they are able to sense the anger and wrath in someone.
