Finding a taboo

All of the Spirit have a taboo, something either strongly related to their concept or so opposing that concept that performing an act related to it can stop a Spirit from acting, banish it, hurt it or even permanently kill it. It could be anything like cleaning close to a Spirit of junk, dirt, and filth. Or not looking into the eyes of a predator Spirit stopping it from hunting.   The best way to survive after the Extinction is to learn as many Spirit taboos as quickly as possible, and see the patterns that show up as it may help protect oneself from the unknown Spirits.

Greater taboos

Of course there are also greater taboos, things that apply to every Spirit just because they are a Spirit. For example, no Spirit can cross a line made out of salt, red strings scaring some of them away while using various seals, protective circles, and talismans can permanently lock the Spirit inside an area.   Those greater taboos are why humanity is still alive, as they were able to create a few places where no Spirit can enter.

Contacting the spirits

There are some greater taboos, that, while not completely protecting the user, can slow down Spirits while also being a source of information.   Using an ouija board or a spirit box and asking a question can stop even a raging Spirit just long enough for them to finish answering said question. In some rare cases, such a hard change in their thinking can completely stop them from continuing their rampage.

Healing a possession

If done before the Spirit completely fuses with a body and changes it too much, it is possible to save someone suffering from Possession. To do so, one needs to perform any type of exorcism they are eligible to perform (though sometimes said exorcisms performed correctly by nonbelievers still work).
