Cathayans

In the World that Was, Cathay was a mighty nation of great size and power that rivaled the Empire of Man, but was geographically distant from most other human nations and isolated.  They were isolated not just by geography but by the choice of their leaders who preferred to have minimal contact with outsiders.   As the Empire of Man expanded and then contracted again Cathay mostly remained unchanged and stagnant, until during The Age of Exploration Cathay was once again brought into contact with the men of the West, but now these men had more sophisticated technology and magic than they did.   The Western Old World powers were able to subject to some very one sided treaties and agreements that left Cathay as a second rate at best despite their large size.   In the dark frontier, most Cathayans are immigrants who came over to work on the transcontinental railroads or the families of said railroad workers.  They are not the most numerous Humans in the wild west, but they have their own distinctive communities here and there, especially near the coast.
