Realm of the Northern Lights

"I can't believe Santa's real and we have to save christmas. I may as well not report this, I don't think anybody will believe me on this."   -The Penguin

Geography

The exact size of this plane is unknown. But what has been documented gives it a resemblance towards the Canadian arctic but with a metaphysical twist. It has been observed that the known area exists on a spherical planet with a sun and moon. This fact has been confirmed by analyzing the angles of shadows at certain areas and the flyers who visited went up high enough to notice that it was a spherical planet. These flyers have also claimed that the forests go all the way up the equator with the exception of farmlands. The fact that there are stars in the sky indicates that this realm os at minimum a demiplane or pocket dimension   The entire area is covered in snow with the exception being a few farms beyond the forest; where it's far south enough to have summer. To the south, there is a boreal forest and to the north is a massive tundra both reach beyond what the eye can see. Mountains can be seen both near and far from about any point on the known area. There is a dirt road that cuts through the forest that leads to farmland. It is known that the locals get a good percentage of food from there. The average waterscape have the same glowing lights found in the river in down.   On the other end of this road is a large town with a colorful river. The population consists of Lutins (little goblins) and other small fairy creatures. The entire settlement looks like a Christmas village if they added in a little to much Christmas. The architectural style is a mostly modern american (Circa 1950) composed of brick, metal and wood all gathered and made from the plane. The average building has heating and a slanted roof to deal with snow and cold. The streets are cobblestone and the sidewalks are made of stone slates. Within the last few decades to town had to be rebuilt due to numerous attacks on Santa. During the reconstruction it was decided to drop the over the top Christmas aesthetic.   There are areas that contain docks, Santa's workshop, sewers, a water treatment facility, a train station that leads to other planes and Koliak's castle. The workshop area is where Santa does his business. The castle is where Kolaik and his family lives. The structure is made of various magnetic stones and resembles a small medieval castle with bedrooms, a dining hall, a library and a workshop for Koliak. There are also areas in town designated for Nelvana's polar bears and Tanero's stray dogs.   The docks can be baffling to anyone who ventures into this realm. But the reasoning makes sense if you have knowledge of Inuit mythology. In many myths, the Northern Lights are connected to the dead and spirits and the river serves a a variation on the river Styx. The river is a glowing liquid light who's color's resemble those found in an Aurora Borealis. The docks have a boating company that can bring wandering spirits over to Sedna's Realm, Adlivun. Though how the dead find their way here is unknown. The river can also lead to any area of sky that has an aurora; It's best to find a magical flying boat if your going to do this.   The geology of the realm consists mostly magnetic rocks and minerals and has a strong magnetic field. The soil is rich enough to support a forest. This is apparently the case for the entire planet as soil samples were tested on multiple trips.   It was also noted by multiple trips that the climate resembles that of Canada. The tundra areas contain areas or permafrost and permanent ice wit it's coldest areas reaching below -50 degrees Celsius. To any traveler who finds thenself here, keep in mind that the further north you go the colder the maximum temperature will be. It has been documented that the southern areas can reach up to a high of 30 degrees while the northern areas have a high of 10 degrees. The Tundra is also incredibly harsh in both climate and weather but vegetation and animals do live here. The Boreal Forest has the temperature range of -17 degrees to about 12 degrees Celsius. Further south it has been noted that the temperatures can reach up to 32 degrees celsius but no further.   On a sidenote, There are other unknown areas undocumented to Earth institutions but are known to the locals. One visit to Kolaik's library showed several maps detailing the planet. This includes lakes large enough to be oceans, several mines, a north and south pole and a few other towns.

Fauna & Flora

The Flora and Fauna species are one typically found int the Canadian Boreal forest and Tundra. This includes: Animals: polar bears, caribou, loons, beavers, vultures, hawks, grouse, owls, hummingbirds, kingfishers, woodpeckers, passerines, and stray dogs. Trees: black spruce, white spruce, balsam fir, larch (tamarack), lodgepole pine, jack pine, trembling and large-toothed aspen, cottonwood and white birch, and balsam poplar.   There are also mythical creatures that can be found here, including: Lutins, gnomes, yetis, sasquatches, treefolk, Qalupaliks and other creatures from Inuit mythology.   The elementals here are normally composed of water, ice, earth and various minerals. The water and ice elementals tend to incorporate the glow of the Northern Lights while the earth based elementals are normally magnetic.   It is also known that the occasional spirit or undead wanders this plane.   It should be noted that many of the animals, creatures and plants sparkle with the colors of the northern lights.

Natural Resources

Wood, magnetic rocks and minerals, maple syrup.
IT'S METAPHYSICAL NATURE It is accepted by locals, visitors and scientists who tried to analyse the plane accept that it's quirks stem from it's metaphysical aspect. It's creation is unknown. Going by mythology in-universe, it was either created by Koliak, conquered by him or he was born there.   By D&D terms it is a neutral demiplane who's domain should be between sky, earth and light and has the function of death transition. It also is the metaphysical embodyment of the Northern Lights, northern climate and wildlife, Christmas and possibly magnetism.   ABOUT WANDERING SPIRITS. The river is one way for the dead to move on. Since this is a comic book styled universe, the river connecting to other underworlds shouldn't be out of the question.   In-universe, the answer to how it connects is a secret only known to the gods of death. This realm is believed to be a mashup between several myths that revolve around the northern lights and acts, in a way, is seen as an antechamber by some of the undead. How any form of undead finds their way here is unknown.   The realm has the quality that allows ghosts and spirits to be semicorporeal

Author's Notes

I MADE THIS UP Even though i'm using Inuit mythology in my world I'm also going to make stuff up. This is one of those things and should be treated as something I made up. Do not treat this as legitimate, real world mythology
