Averine Species in Wasteland Of Ohm | World Anvil

Averine (A-ver-een)

One of the three races that comprise the Awoken . Avrines are humanoid avian-like beings known for their prehensile feet and tail. Along with their enhanced agility and flexibility, they are also known to be the smallest of the Awoken. As with all awoken, they possess the ability of electrokinesis.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The most notable feature of the averines is their size when compared to other awoken. Normally slim of build, and short when compared to their Angtor or Urrock brothers and sisters. Their main body, and arms keep a familiar humanoid shape with their legs being digitigrade. Averines always have a coat of fur and feathers that come in a variety of naturally occurring colors that vary based on ethnicity.   Averines have a thick whip-like tail ranging from the length of an arm all the way up to match the height of their body. Their feet are bird-like with either three or four talon-tipped toes. Both their feet and tail are prehensile, capable of supporting their entire body weight. A common complaint is their tail having a mind of its own. This behavior is due to natural reflexes that result in the tail moving to maintain the bipedal upright posture when on the ground. It is also a lie, as they have precise control over the large appendage.   Like all awoken they possess an iron-laced skeletal structure and an enhanced immune system that can fend off naturally occurring poisons and toxins as well as being highly resistant to synthetically produced versions. Unlike their siblings, they have improved reflexes, resistance to G-Forces, and range of motion in their joints. This has led to a strange phenomenon where up is more subjective to an averine, and they don't mind being upside down or relaxing in strange positions.

Coloration

Common colors of the averine coat are white, gray, brown, dark blue, and black. They are considerably more colorful however when compared to other awoken‌, as some ethnicities have brighter colors as a part of their fur and feather patterns. Colors such as pale yellow, orange, and red are not uncommon to see but are rarely primary colors. The patterns and arrangement of colors are determined by the ethnicity of a particular averine. Their eyes run a large gambit of colors from blue, green, brown, amber, hazel, gray, and rarely aqua, but these eye colors are shared by all awoken‌ species.

Genetics and Reproduction

Like the other awoken species, averines are mammals. Giving live birth to one or two children at a time as well as producing milk for their offspring. The gestation time of averines also match the time seen in angtor and urrock. Along with this, the reproductive organs of the averines match the appearance of those seen on the other awoken. Despite these similarities, the three races can not interbreed, and no attempt has been successful.   The raising process of their children is also the same, often with a family of two adults and multiple children. Often these families are supported by the surrounding community. This specifically seems to be a major building block of the dependence the three races have on one another.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

Averine facial structure consists of two forward-facing eyes, a beak-shaped bone plate over a short muzzle structure, and a dot or line of different colored fur over each eye to act as eyebrows for expression purposes. Their muzzle contains a set of teeth similar to an omnivore and a pointed tongue. They almost always have large pointed ears atop their head, but a few do not. They sometimes possess hair that is always the same color as their feathers and fur, a trait they share with Urrock. Children who are not averine sometimes misconstrue their muzzles for beaks due to their facial bone plate.

Average Intelligence

Like all awoken, averines are sentient and learn quickly. They excel at finding solutions and adapting to complex situations, a trait they share with their two sibling species. Their intellect is equal with the other awoken.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Similarly to the angtor, and urrock, the averine can sense near by sources of electricity thanks to their electrokinesis ability. However this ability is a skill one has to learn.   Unlike their sibling species, the averines have improved senses of hearing and sight thanks to their large eyes and ears. Tho the trait isn't seen in all averine, some can see into the ultraviolet band of light, and possess a sort of Nightvision. Their hearing is directional and can pick up very slight sounds. This often means they require hearing protection when they serve combat roles.

Civilization and Culture

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

Despite their being many communities with differing traditions on Minerva, a few commonalities seem to always crop up. Specifically in the form of self-expression using their hair, small accessories, and dye. Colors such as green, blue, and pink are not uncommon to see added to one's coat, hair and feathers. However, when added in abundance it can be seen as gaudy.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Like the angtor andurrock the averines see themselves as apart of the Awoken. Seeing it as a survival necessity to have members of the other two races around, and suffering mentally when put into communities of only their own species. The exact nature of this connection remains a mystery to all three races. The biggest reason given by individuals is that having the other two races around broadens the skill set of the whole. This explanation does not explain why they gain comfort from the presence of the other two species they are co-dependant with.
