Alathea and Zarinia, the Sea Sisters

An unquenchable hatred

The two water deities of the pantheon are notorious for their unending hatred but very few seem to have any idea how that came to be. Theories abound of course, ranging from the plausible to the absurd. One of the most popular stories maintains that it was a lover that drew both sisters' interest and in time drove a wedge between them. Others say that it was a simple misunderstanding that got out of hand because of the two goddess' mercurial temperament. Only a select few sages have an inkling of the actual reason for their rivalry however.

The truth of the matter lies in the two sisters' very birth. Back before the Great Purge, Nerion the Two-faced was the god of the sea. He was a powerful deity, a personification of the sea, as revered for his bountiful benevolence as he was feared for his tempestuous fury. The Purge dealt a fatal blow to the sea god and split him in two, even as the sea itself fractured. The deity's immense power coalesced and the two halves became the Sea Sisters, each inheriting one of their father's opposite personalities. Their mutual hatred began as soon as they laid eyes on each other, as powerful as the crashing waves, as inevitable as the tide, and has not abated since.
