Being Authentic

The power of YOU.

It's I am, stuck at home, in front of the computer with a heavy art deadline to meet for one of my clients, and I was deterred by watching the US Senate argue over a bill. One that will try and save this country...yet likely screw me in particular.   Why?   Because I've been a freelancer for over 30 years and don't fit into any standard business category I know of--or one that politicians use to make their points or try to save with their accumulated power.   I'm the guy who just wants to work hard, live his life, love his family, help other people and hopefully have enough coin left over to buy ice cream once in a while and take his darling wife out on a date from time to time.   I'm the guy who lives his life on his sleeve, living the same principle-based existence today as I did a decade ago.   I'm told by many friends that I'm 'authentic'.

authentic | ôˈTHen(t)ik | (abbreviation auth.)

Of undisputed origin; genuine: the letter is now accepted as an authentic document | authentic 14th-century furniture.
• made or done in the traditional or original way, or in a way that faithfully resembles an original: the restaurant serves authentic Italian meals | every detail of the movie was totally authentic.
• based on facts; accurate or reliable: an authentic depiction of the situation.
• (in existentialist philosophy) relating to or denoting an emotionally appropriate, significant, purposive, and responsible mode of human life.
Does that apply to me? I hope so--especially with all that's going on in the world.   ...because I think we need more authentic around us.

WHY Be Authentic?

As creators, I feel it's our job to be consistent in what we do and part of that requires us to BE who we ARE.   If I tell you I'm not a salesperson and have no desire to sell you something, then do all I can to monetize every step of my interactions with you, I'm not authentic...I'm a liar.   Not that selling things is bad. It's not. But our message and creations should be a representation of the truth, not a skewed version crafted to mislead those we interact with.   TRANSLATION: Be who you are, 100% of the time and you are more likely to succeed at whatever you're doing, if for no other reason than you'll get out of your own way.   Knowing who you are, and BEING who you are tends to give you courage, strength, and tenacity to face obstacles in your way--as well as endure the challenges you face.

A Great Example: Matthew Mercer

I want to leave you with a fun interview with Critical Roles Matthew Mercer.   If there's an authentic person in the spotlight, it's Matthew.   He's been through quite a lot in his life, and overcoming what he has is inspiration for all, in my opinion. So I wanted to share this interview, to give you some perspective on your own life, what you've gone through and how you can even make what you might see as weaknesses, into strengths.   Enjoy.     Just be YOU.   The rest is just practice.   ~ See you soon!
