Almata Newt Species in Waiting for the song to end | World Anvil

Almata Newt

For all that it is a rather inconspicuous looking creature, it is one of the most feared in the world. This is due to the toxin it carries in it's saliva, which causes the condition Amusia Almata. There is also a measure of mystery surounding these small amphibians as they seemingly sprang into existence around the same time as The Needle appeared. Previous to that there had been no evidence of them having existed anywhere, and there had never been a reported, or even rumoured, case of the condition they inflict.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Their bodies are elongated and slightly flattened, with rounded wedge shaped heads. They have four limbs, two each front and back of the body, which protrude from the side of the body. Each limb ends in four long digits which have small pads on the ends, used for clinging to surfaces. Their heads are rounded wedge shaped, with smal fins protruding from the sides just in front of their gills. They have long tails which are the same length as their bodies, the tails taper down to the tip and have a fin which runs the length of the top side.

Ecology and Habitats

Newts are amphibeous and as such are only found in areas alongside water. Rivers, ponds, lakes and marshes are all habitats in which the newt is comfortable making it's home. They prefer fresh water so are not usually found too close to river mouths or in salt water marshes. They also seem to dislike the cold so are not found in the far northern reaches of the main pangea. However, since most of the world is quite warm and precipitation levels are high in most places, they are quite prolific in the world.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Their eyes can see equally as well under water as on dry land. They are also able to sense subtle changes in environment through their skin, as well as vibrations through water. They don't seem to have any ears so it unknown whether they are capable of hearing. As well as gills for breathing underwater they also have small nostrils on the front tip of their faces, which do seem to be able to sense certain smells such as food.
