Prefrontal Leucotomy with Cephalid Larvae

Despite the cold of the metal under my back and the puffs of my breath in the air, I’m sweating. I shudder and shake as the gray stone ceiling swirls around before my vision. Every noise makes me twitch as I strain my ears for something - anything - other than the dripping of water and my own whimpers. I blink rapidly as the sweat stings my eyes and my ragged breaths quaver as I hold back a sob. The leather strap bolts my head to the table, keeping it from turning or lolling, so I cannot see who enters when the bolted door finally opens. I’m forced to watch the ceiling as another drop of condensation falls on my face, making me flinch.   “Now, now,” a masculine voice attempted to sooth me with a rehearsed tone, “no need to fret, friend. That pain you’re experiencing will soon be gone!” Every movement he made echoed around the room and pierced my brain like a metal spike; even the sound of his clothes moving against each other made me cringe in pain and a sob finally wells out of my throat.   “This is revolutionary. You should feel privileged that you qualify for this procedure… it’s very delicate and expensive.” His bedside manner didn’t fool me. I could hear that little creature in the jar writhing to escape. Its tiny feet pinged off of the glass, making me grit my teeth in agony. I felt them creak at the force.   The man clicked his tongue disapprovingly and without another word began to pinch my nose. When I opened my mouth to cry out in refusal, he shoved something flat and wooden between my teeth. My lips trembled and I could feel my eyes watering with tears. I was paralyzed with fear. My own heart hammered in my ears, making my eyes bulge. The sweat on my body felt like a thousand ants or sand crabs crawling over my flesh. It itched so badly… I needed to scratch. My mouth filled with cotton. My scalp, it crawled -- I need to tear it off --   I heard the lid of the jar clatter on the table and something metal crack against the glass, only to see it was a pair of tongs hitting the jar. I saw the little silver tentacled creature squirming and trying to swim through the air to escape. An animalistic bray escaped me as I started to thrash to escape, struggling to flee, straining to get away, to go anywhere other than here. The straps held me still… There was nowhere to go.   “Shh, shh, shh…” the man placed his hands over my eyes so I couldn’t see where he was placing the tongs against my face. My skin crawling didn’t matter anymore as I felt the thing’s pincers latch onto my nostril.   Everything after that was nothing more than a bloody skull splitting haze as it burrowed into my cranium.   From the notes of Doctor Dmitri Karvescu Subject #029 21st of Kirn, 23:09   Subject was admitted for symptoms of severe and debilitating anxious behavior. Open flesh wounds have been documented on their arms and scalp from scratching. It seemed containment only progressed this irritation. We must develop some kind of restraints for patients to wear at all times.   After the gas treatment to eliminate the larvae, the subject slept for about an hour while I extracted the corpse. Since then, they have been able to walk, eat, drink, and respond somewhat accurately to inquiries about their name, the date, and etcetera. Time is needed to mark their progress, but Subject 29 seems to be a marked success!

Utility

The Cephalid larvae are currently used to treat debilitating mental disorders such as anxiety, hallucinations, or melancholy.
Access & Availability
Currently experimental.
Discovery
Cephalid Larvae were discovered on the southern coast of Ulvad incubating in a school of large fish. An outbreak occurred when they were fished up and cleaned, disturbing the larvae and attacking the crew.
