Aldous "Thug Smasher" Periwinkle

The tales of Thug Smasher are many and varied. Some describe him as a titanic raging beast, demolishing farmsteads and razing villages with his massive hammer and breath of fire, while others hail him as a shining hero, standing high above his peers, and casting shadows upon all with his radiating halo and banishes demons and devils to the depths below.   In truth, Thug Smasher's 8ft ego is packed into a 3ft 2in frame, and while his personality radiates from him like the rays of the sun, his physical presence pales in comparison. Even astride his faithful steed, Thunderhoof the goat, Thug Smasher barely reaches 5ft in height. But his small stature has never been a hindrance to Aldous, moreover, it has been the inspiration for his efforts and bravery in the face of often seemingly insurmountable odds.   Born as the second son to a farming family in Barleywell, Aldous Periwinkle enjoyed a loving and playful childhood among his halfling brethren. He enjoyed nothing more than playing 'knights and thieves' with the other local children, always insisting on being the brave warrior that brings the criminals to justice, running around with his stick and defeating all the naughty children in honorable combat. It wasn't long before his parents saw this trend and knew what the future would hold for young Aldous.   As he came of age, his parents arranged for Aldous to squire for a knight of the realm in the hopes that he would get a sense of satisfaction from being close to a man of nobility, training and justice. It was unlikely that a halfling would ever become a knight in his own right, so they hoped that Aldous would be happy as a squire, getting as close as any halfling was ever likely to. While Aldous was so excited for the opportunity, he was still adamant about becoming a knight himself.   For 3 years he squired for Sir Derrington, tending to his horse, armor and weapons, and even taking time to spar and practice alongside the good knight to improve his skills. Sir Derrington treated the young halfling as if he were his own son, and generally encouraged Aldous to pursue his knightly dreams, although he never really expected the boy to succeed. He was just too short.    Despite this, Aldous pushed himself to the very brink in training, and never backed down from any fight. He soon earned a reputation as a fierce and dedicated warrior. More than this, it was said that his sense of morality was so fine and sharp that it was more deadly than any sword he could swing. Towards the end of his 3rd year as a squire for Sir Derrington, Aldous decided it was time for him to make his own name in the world. As a gift, Sir Derrington presented Aldous with a sword to help him begin his quest. While there was nothing particularly special about its make, Aldous treasured the weapon, vowing to use it to slay all evil doers and bring criminals to justice.    His very first adventure after leaving Sir Derrington was to the nearby town of Howerden, a place well known for dairy and cheese-making industry, and one that was a prime target for bandits due to its weak defenses. Arriving in town not long after a recent bandit raid, Aldous made the promise to defeat the bandits on their next attack single handedly. He was laughed out of town by everyone. Finding himself on the outskirts of Howerden, Aldous was taken in by a goat farmers daughter and allowed to stay in their pen for the night. Despite being laughed at by the people of the town, Aldous' resolved remained as steely as the blade of his sword.   After several more days, the bandits launched another attack on the town. The residents had prepared themselves by boarding up their houses and leaving much of their riches in a pile in the center of the town, hoping that the easy access would discourage the bandits from causing too much damage. Despite this, they began burning buildings and attacked the unfortunate few that could stay safely inside. That was until Aldous made his way to them.   Approaching from the main road atop a goat borrowed from the farm he was staying at, Aldous bellowed to the bandits "Leave this town in peace or face my wrath!" Of the 8 bandits that were attacking the town, fully half of them fell over laughing, the others barely able to contain themselves as they saw this strange sight approaching them. That was their folly. Before they could come to their senses, Aldous charged forward on his steed and swing his sword so hard that he cleaved the lead bandits right leg clean off at the hip. Two more were felled before any of the others had even drawn a blade in defense. Leaping from atop the goat, Aldous hacked and slashed away at the bandits, beating three more, and causing the last one to run terrified into the nearby woods, never to return.   The people of Howerden were amazed and greatly relieved. They asked young Aldous to whom they owed their thanks, and he replied, "Call me, Thug Smasher, and this" patting his trusty goat, "is Thunderhoof!" and thusly, the legends of Thug Smasher Perwinkle were born.   Since that time, Aldous has travelled the lands defending the weak and slaying all evils that he sees.
