The Order of the Talons of Justice

"Hold fast to the Code, Brothers and Sisters, let it guide you, and Bahamut will smile upon your days."     Justicar Boraxis Sulx to a cadre of young pages
The Talons of Justice are the premier religious order dedicated to Bahaumut, the Platinum Dragon, God of Justice, Law, and Nobility. The headquarters of the Talons resides in Dragonsperch, a mountainous island in Arkhosia. Dedicated to rooting out corruption and injustice, Talons are found across the multiverse, often with roles and positions within governments.   While the Talons of Justice consist primarily of dragonborn there are no restrictions on members of other races joining the Talons.

Ranks

The Talons of Justice are arranged in a tight chain of command and order. Acolytes of the Talons are broken into two categories, Pages and Squires, while upper members of the order are referred to as Knights Errant, Abjudicators, Justicars, High Justicars, Marshalls of the Order, and the Grand Marshall.

Page

Joining the Talons of Justice is an ardous process that for many begins as children. Young dragonborn are often urged to join the Talons at ages as young as five. Most pages are five to twelve years old, however when older individuals join no exceptions are made for age. All prospective Talons begin as a page. Pages are grouped into a cadre of about ten prospective Talons that are all roughly the same age.   As a page, they are taught the Ptarian Code, the governing religious text of any who claim to follow Bahamut. Additionally, pages will clean the general quarters of the church or temple where they reside, and will help with the preparation of meals. Pages are also taught the basics of armed combat, horsemanship, the theoretical side of spellwork, and chivalry, however this is only a cursory survey of the topics as they will be the basis of their education as a squire.   These lessons serve as a display of a page's prowess. A page who shows a particular affinity towards spellwork will be more likely to be selected as an Abjudicator for example.

Squire

After a page has reached the age of ten, and has served for at least three years as a page, they are eligible to be selected as a squire by a Knight Errant or Abjudicator. A squire travels with their Knight Errant or Abjudicator on quests, missions, and adventures.   As a squire, they are trained daily in combat. This training is the responsibility of their Knight Errant or Abjudicator. Abjudicators will also train their squires in the prayers that are the basis of the divine spells that they weave.   Squires also further study the Ptarian Code. A seminal point of their training, and something that must be completed before they can be knighted, is that they must rewrite the Ptarian Code from memory.

Knight Errant

The Paladins and Warriors of the Talons of Justice are known as a Knight Errant. The Knights Errant focus on martial prowess and are the premier military arm of the Talons. Knights Errant travel the multiverse searching out injustice in the aim to right the wrongs that they see. A Knight Errant will often have a "home" temple that they return to throughout the year, but they travel from place to place nearly half of the year.   While many Knights Errant are not trained in spellwork, some do have the ability to perform some of the spells that Adjudicators practice. When not traveling, a Knight Errant with no squire will teach the classes that pages take. During this time period they screen pages for a new potential squire.

Adjudicator

The Priests and Clerics of the Talons of Justice are known as an Adjudicator. Not much separates the distinction between a knight errant and an adjudicator, save that an Abjudicator is trained and skilled in spellcraft. Like a Knight Errant, an Abjudicator may have a "home" temple but half of their time is spent traveling from place to place. When not traveling they will also teach pages, just like Knights Errant.

Justicar

Attaining the rank of Justicar is an honor that most Knights Errant and Abjudicators long for. A Justicar is an upper member of the clergy. A Justicar will be given a temple or church in a small city or town to defend and lead, where they are then known as the Protector of. Often a Justicar will be called upon by the local government of their small city or town as an advisor, or to sit in judgement in legal cases.   A Justicar often is too busy to take on a squire, as they simply lack the time to dedicate to the education of said squire. However, there are occasional exceptions made. The Knights Errant and Abjudicators of a temple or church will report to the Justicar that serves as Protector of that church or temple, while the Justicar will report directly to a High Justicar based on their geographical location.

High Justicar

The upper leadership of the Talons begins with the High Justicars. A High Justicar will often be the Protector of a temple or church in a large city. A High Justicar will often sit as an advisor to a king or queen, and will be called upon to negotiate treaties and agreements between nation states. When a Talon of Justice is named High Justicar their days of having a squire are done.

Marshall of the Order

There are just eight Talons that serve as a Marshall of the Order. These eight Marshalls are stationed in Dragonsperch and are the ruling advisory body of the entirety of the religious order. When a Marshall dies, the Marshalls and Grand Marshall discuss potential replacements from amongst the High Justicars.   The Marshalls vote on all decisions, however they can be overriden by the Grand Marshall. If the Grand Marshall overrides a decree, the other Marshalls may hold a second vote that cannot be overriden. In the event of a tied vote however, the Grand Marshall serves as tie breaker.

Grand Marshall

The Grand Marshall is the leader of the Talons of Justice, however they cannot directly decree any command. Decrees must come from the Marshalls of the Order, and then the Grand Marshall can override a decree they disagree with.   Upon the event of the death of the Grand Marshall, the most senior Marshall assumes the mantle of Grand Marshall.

The Ptarian Code

The Ptarian Code is the religious canon of any who look to follow Bahamut and his teachings. Written by the ancient golden dragon Ptaris in the Age of Antiquity, it has served as the basis for every sect that has risen that worships Bahamut. It is a collection 73 tenets, and every Talon is required to memorize each and every one of the tenets.
