First Junta

Marcus the 17th was quite possibly the worst emperor the Cennti had had up to this date. During a time when the Empire need a strong emperor more than ever, they got an immature child who desired only to drink, gamble, and lose himself in all sorts of sadistic pleasures. From his coronation in 491, he had done nothing basically removed himself from power entirely. For 19 years this went one, for 19 years the empire crumbled around them. Powerful lords and ladies on the outerworlds were once again questioning Cennti authority, and for a time governed themselves as if they were independent nations. In many places the common people were starving in the streets, and the emperor did nothing. Many were happy with this idle emperor, they could go out into the stars and form their own countries, ethnic groups like the Hims always desired to have a nation governed by their own people. Others were distraught, the dream of Marcus the Great, the dream of a united humanity with a common goal, looked to finally be dying. Over the years, conspiracy against the emperor began to form. At first it was a small group of conspirators, composed of old generals and die hard imperialists. In secret it grew, until it had grown so big that it was barely a secret at all. The emperor cared little, he was too blinded by his own pursuit of pleasure to see what was right before his very eyes. On the 30th of Marus, a military coup was initiated. The emperor was slain by his own bodyguards, he was too out of his senses with substance abuse to even notice. In less than 24 hours the palace was taken and a provisional government was formed. The Lord Admirals and Generals of the Cennti Empire formed a Junta that would restore order to the empire and maintain it until a new emperor could be chosen, for Marcus the 17th had no official heirs. He had plenty of children, but all of them were bastards. One of these bastards was Sulla, a young man who claimed the throne was rightfully his, the Junta referred to him as the Bastard King. At the same time separatist groups rebelled against the new government, the largest being the Alba Confederacy. After 12 years of war, the Junta was able to defeat both the Bastard King and the Confederates with a combination of shrewd diplomacy and brutal tactics. After the war it was decided that the Lord Admirals and Generals that composed the junta would vote on a leader from within their own ranks. Whoever was chosen would be given the title of emperor until either they died or the junta voted them out. Three emperors were chosen by the First Junta, Gregor Lyons(522-525), Decius Neron(525-538), and Wilhelm Lyons(538-557). The First Junta came to an end after internal strife led to the junta splitting into two groups, which was followed by one group murdering everyone belonging to the other group. These people formed the Second Junta, which elected Tommen Agros as the new emperor.

Structure

The Junta is governed very similarly to the government under the Marcus dynasty. Each world still had a congress, composed of lords and landowners who elected a senator from among their ranks to represent them. The main difference was that the emperor was chosen by a council composed of the Lord Admirals and Generals. A Lord Admiral commanded the entire void fleet of a world, and a Lord General commanded the entire army of that world.

Public Agenda

Their original intent was to restore order to the Empire until a new emperor could take the responsibility, and in public it still was, but the council grew to like their power, and aimed to keep it for themselves.
