Hangman's Cove Settlement in Viridia | World Anvil

Hangman's Cove

When you want a job done right, but you'd rather it done off the record, Hangman's Cove is the right place for you. Built on an island off the coast of A'Shai, Hangman's Cove has no governing body, therefore, it has no laws. Many pirate crews will dock their boats there without fear of being stopped by peacekeepers, but while still running the risk of being robbed by other pirates. Needless to say, it is one of the most dangerous places in all of Viridia.

Demographics

No one knows who lives there, as there has never been a census taken. There are houses and businesses set up, but they aren't regulated by anyone. There could be a few thousand people living there, or half a million. It is impossible to tell.

Infrastructure

There are thousands of docks in the cove that are considered first come, first serve. If you are docked in a spot that someone else wants, it is entirely likely that your ship will be sank to make room for theirs.

History

Originally, Hangman's Cove was just an outpost where legendary pirate Trongil the half-orc stored his ships. Trongil was known by his enemies as the hangman, as when his crew would pillage a ship, they would murder the crew by hanging them from their sails. The Hangman died with a fleet of fifty stolen ships and had sent out a message of their location, declaring them to be "yours if you get there first." Eventually the pirate community built up a sort of lawless society on what was once their most dreaded foe's personal safe-haven.

Architecture

Most of the buildings in Hangman's Cove are shoddily built, as you would have to be a fool to build for posterity in a city populated solely by criminals.
