Ethereal Ranking

The situation ahead of them was bad. Their target was aware of their approach - a stealthy insertion and infiltration had failed, and the alarm was raised. Furthermore, their target was ranked a Parisian 9 of Spades and a Chesarian Knight, meaning that ethereal violence was on the table. No-one on the team was walking out of this unscathed.   Damning the situation at hand, Armin decided the best route at this point was to take the initiative. The enemy knows they're here - but does not know when they will strike, from where, or how. Calling upon the ropes of the Ether from the depths of his soul, he rallied his team behind him, before tearing through the Etherspace into the depths of the warehouse ahead of them.   "Into the breach!" he called out. It was now or never.
In the world of Vinesia, the ranking of a practitioner's power is based on the properties of Aspect, Magnitude, and Utility. In an attempt to classify the quality of a practitioner's gifts and expression, the numerous arcane societies across the whole of Vinesia have standardized their quantification of a person's gift, which gave birth to the Parisian and Chesarian systems of ranks.   The ranking system is not perfect, as it does not account to all of a person's ethereal capacity, nor is it flexible enough to deal with situational alterations in baseline status. However, for the intent of classifying a person at a baseline level, it is considered a good standard, and is supported across the world of Vinesia all the same.   Once a rank is bestowed, it is not permanent, as a person can change over time. It is a common practice for practitioners to annually submit themselves for review and re-ranking as best as possible.

The Parisian Ranking

The Parisian ranking system focuses on the user's aspect and magnitude.   The Parisian system divides users according to their aspect, as follows:
Symbol Representation
Clubs Clubs tend to focus on stability and defense. Most clubs-aligned aspect practitioners specialize in warding, barriers, and stabilization workings.
Diamonds Diamonds are viewed as the ones who glitter or who shine the most, and are also considered the "suit" of versatility. Diamond-aligned practitioners tend to be generalists, or specialize in a particular set of workings that cannot be fully encompassed under the other three major suits.
Hearts Hearts best signify those who specialize in the reconstruction and healing of the world, of the body, and of the soul. Clergy and medical professionals are primarily comprised of those with the heart aspect.
Spades Spades are viewed as the offense - the tip of the spear. Spades specialize in offensive workings and are often the hallmark of martial practitioners.
The Parisian system further divides a person according to the magnitude of their gift, and that classification is as follows:
Rank Explanation Examples
2 This is an autonomous designation rank. No ethereal expression or resistance is expected at this rank.
3 This is an autonomous designation rank. An automaton or construct at this rank will be in possession of one cantrip, and will offer meagre ethereal resistance.
4 This is an autonomous designation rank. An automaton or construct at this rank will offer middling resistance to foreign ethereal expression, and may be loaded with a low-rank invocation or multiple cantrips.
5 This is an autonomous designation rank. The highest rank for constructs or automatons, significant ethereal resistance or expression can be expected at this rank, including B-rank invocations.
6 This is the lowest rank that a sapient practitioner may be registered as. Regarded as a starting rank, all of their Mental attributes will be ranked E.
7 A practitioner ranked as a Seven will possess at least one of their Mental attributes at the rank of D. A practitioner at at Seven will also know at least one cantrip and one invocation.
8 A practitioner ranked as an Eight will possess at least one of their Mental attributes at the rank of C, and a second attribute at the rank of D. A practitioner at rank Eight will know at least three workings, including one Invocation. Arthur Wisteria
9 A practitioner ranked as a Nine will possess at least one of their Mental attributes at the rank of B, and their remaining attributes at rank C. A practitioner at this rank is required to know at least two invocations.
10 A practitioner ranked as a Ten will possess at least one Mental attribute at the rank of A or are in the possession of an Emanation, regardless of its rank. Worryingly enough, large Seraxi forms are capable of power at this magnitude, and are capable of the usage of an Emanation. Seraxi Queen
Jack A practitioner ranked as a Jack will possess at least two Mental attributes at the rank of A and is in possession of an Emanation that will have a minimum of C in terms of magnitude, range, and persistence. Clarisse Mitfield
Queen Queens are practitioners who will possess all three Mental attributes at the rank of A. A Queen is in possession of an Emanation that will have a minimum of B in terms of magnitude, range, and persistence.
King Kings are regarded as abnormally powerful, with at least one Mental attribute at the rank of S, and all other Mental attributes at the rank of A. A King is also in possession of an Emanation with a minimum of A in terms of magnitude, range, and persistence. Jacob Silas Mitfield
Ace Aces are as powerful as Kings, but with a wider reaching Emanation. Aces will possess the same qualifications as Kings, but an Ace is in possession of an Emanation that will have an S rank in magnitude, range, or persistence, with the remainder of their Emanation ranks being minimum A. Adrienne Belfour
Joker Jokers do not fall under the typical classification, either owning to magnitude that is immeasurable by other means, divinity, the possession of a unique Emanation, or other extenuating factors. Jokers are not necessarily the strongest within the Parisian system, but are regarded as wildcards, which makes them unpredictable and dangerous, even to the most powerful Ace. Tiõ  Amarise

The Chesarian Ranking

The Chesarian ranking system focuses on a user's utility in the field of battle or in a given situation where multiple ethereal point sources of expression are in conflict.
Rank Explanation Examples
Pawn Pawns are considered limited in their scope of reach, but possess unparalleled potential. Often considered the rank of budding practitioners, pawns rarely stay as such for long, and quickly "mature" into another rank as they utilize their gift in real life practice.
Knight Knights do not command the same presence of threat as the other classes, but are not limited in scope - they may circumvent other workings or are unbound by the flow of the situation. Arthur Wisteria
Bishop Bishops are regarding as middling ranks - versatile, but ultimately lacking in domination of situational control.
Rook Rooks are far-reaching practitioners, whose gifts or Emanation are capable of affecting wide swaths of areas, and are useful in multiple aspects. Jacob Silas Mitfield
Queen Queens are considered farther-reaching than Rooks, and are able to effortlessly control the flow of the the situation.
King A Chesarian King may not possess the far-reaching power of a Rook or a Queen, but instead maintains a gift that is critical to situational control or to regional stability.

Designation

When bestowed a rank, a practitioner is identified in the following format:
  1. Their Parisian number/letter rank;
  2. Their Parisian suit;
  3. Their Chesarian rank.
For example, a practitioner may be designated as a 7 of Clubs, Chesarian Bishop. This is the common convention of identifying a practitioner's standing throughout the world of Vinesia, where the ranking system is recognized.

Accreditation

The official bestowing of an ethereal rank is controlled, depending on region. The known bodies that can formally bestow a rank are as follows:
  • The Time Society
  • The Mithambian Arcana Society
  • The Society of the Hellforge
  • The Arisat School

Recognition

An ethereal rank is recognized and bound by law in the following domains:
  • The Kingdom of Cleolinia
  • The Kingdom of Mithambe
  • The Kingdom of Saini
  • The Kingdom of Pehamber
  • The Kingdom of Porfodia
Recognition outside of these kingdoms is not likely, nor does any legal restriction exist in the wildlands.
