The Greenway
The beating green heart of the Draugrlands
On the tattered islands, across the scar of blue, beyond dry wasteland and across dead mountains, a valley of plenty thrives under guard of the Espirillano clans. Here, the hidden lake feeds what life remains. Here, the forest grows untamed. Here, a star fell, and here, a land begins anew.
Geography
Nestled in the Iron Mountains north of Duvoch, where rainwater collects in the Skylake and travels down to the ocean via partially underground rivers. Traversing to the peak of any of the five Iron Mountains will grant a view of the lush and foggy Greenway, but only the western and northern peaks of Sierra Elegua and Sierra Oduduwa, respectively, allow reasonably safe passage. The steep and dangerous peaks of Sierra Shango to the south, the immensely tall Sierra Obatala to the southeast, and the "Twins" Sierra Ibeji with their broken backs to the eastern cliffs prevent Duvoch from making much headway into locating the fabled wode.
Fauna & Flora
The dense minerals of the Iron Mountains both contain the sprawling forest of the Greenway and contain its growth. As such, local flora and fauna has grown to adapt to their lonely ecosystem. Coniferous trees grow tall and largely unbothered, developing a stronger structure and more splayed canopy to capture moisture from the thick fog. Patches of the forest are largely overtaken by Joshwa Sentinels, which grow new canopies as the old ones die out to shade from competitors, generating a browned and dried husk beneath a verdent green cover. Elsewhere, Ironbinders dig their roots deep into mineral deposits for better holds on the steeper slopes of the Greenway, forming nearly vertical walls of powerful trees coveted for their sturdy wood.
Fauna likewise has grown to succeed in the Greenway, from scavengers of the forest floor such as feral raccoons and foxes, to gliding squirrels that leap from tree top to tree top, to beetles and birds hardy enough to pierce the wood of Ironbinders, to apex predators such as Greenwolves and Iron Bears.
Natural Resources
Ironbinder wood is powerful, and resistant to flame, making it an ideal resource for homesteading and shipbuilding. A variety of edible plants and animals are maintained, but this is largely left for severe food shortages and protection of loggers. As well, the litany of unique mineral deposits dotting the Greenway has led to both a consistent source of iron and a consistent source of precious gems. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the Skylake is an abundant source of fresh water, should any calamity ever befall the Espirillano. Duvoch's natural springs and falls stem from underground rivers leading off from the Skylake, supplementing the city's endless needs.
