Octarchy

The Octarchy is the way that magical forces operate in the world of Vi'Dan. The Octarchy is only respected north of the Trans-Vi'Dan Mountain Range, and it is only the people groups that live around each of the seven (yes, seven, I'll come to it) epicentres of Octarchic Energy.
Octarchic energy almost acts like a fluid, being created at the epicentre of that energy type and either fading into undetectability or being destroyed upon contact with the conflicting energy type. What do I mean by conflicting? Well, the 8 different energy types can be sorted into 4 pairs, each of which conteracts and annihilates the opposing energy. The regions where this occurs in the world are known as Dead Zones, compared to Energetic Zones, where a single Octarchic energy holds sway. When a child is born in an area of singular energy (i.e. a location that can have its energy type determined) that child will have the chance to become sensitive to this energy. This can also happen, to a lesser extent, if one or both parents is magically sensitive. However, this can only occur if neither parent has sensitivity to the reverse energy of that location, so, for instance, a Phytomagic mother giving birth in the Da' Lands would have no chance of her child having either Animomagic or Phytomagic sensitivity.

Octarchic energy can be found in certain materials that contain the highest known concentrations of that energy beyond pure essence (for instance Nettles for Phytomancy or Obsidian for Umbramancy.
