Black Island

Black Island is a volcano strewn island in the A'Mi Bay owned by the United A'Mi Duchies. The island serves as the centre for Umbramagic energy and is the home of the Black Forge, which serves to produce the brilliant and enchanted metal known as Shadowsteel, as well as the Black Citadel, the centre for the learning and practise of Umbramancy. Both of these important locations are found in Blackhold, the island's only major town. Blackhold itself serves mainly as a headquarters for anything related to Umbramancy and as such has little industry beyond this. Despite the soil of Black Island being incredibly mineral rich from all the volcanic ash, the heavy presence of Umbramagic energy chokes out all but the hardiest strains of crops. In winter, this heavy magical concentration blackens the leaves of most plants and this, combined with its basalt shores and obsidian glass beaches, is what gives Black Island its name.

Geography

Though surrounded by the reasonably calm A'Mi Bay, Black Island still gets hit by many harsh storms that manage to make it over the rather flat Pale Island to the west. The terrain is mostly flat lava flows, punctuated by many volcanoes. It is believed that this heavy volcanism comes from the troubled route that the Umbramagic force had to go through to breach the surface in the Great Revenance, and during its tumultuous journey brought searing magma to the surface, creating Black Island.

Natural Resources

Large deposits of Obsidian, used to make Shadowsteel, lie in this island, as well as great amounts of basalt. The largest industry (beyond the magocracy of course) is the plentiful fish that can be found off the shores of Black Island.
