Our Lady of Victoriam
Summary
The myth, more of an urban legend really, is that the Virgin Mary appeared herself at the launch of Victoriam City and spoke to Jothan Sixsmith. Interpretations of this myth vary, from Heaven blessing the city to Mary herself prophesying that the city was doomed due to the Empire's hubris.
According to the Loyalists, Mary blessed the city, making it the new heaven on earth. By this interpretation, Victoriam is destined to house the most virutous, most educated, and most blessed people on the earth, and when the end of days comes, Victoriam will remain a paradise on earth.
According to the anti-urbanists, Heaven has scorned Victoriam, and the only way to save the empire is to destroy the city altogether. They believe that the downfall of the empire is coming if humans continue to be boastful and don't repent for their self-absorption.
The real meaning of the marian sighting, if real at all, is yet to be ascertained, as are the words she spoke to Sixsmith.
Historical Basis
The launch of Victoriam was a monumentous event that many people attended, and most believe they saw a spectral woman in white speaking to Jothan Sixsmith, then disappeared. Nearly the entire Empire believes in the legend, and other viewpoints are labeled heretical.
