Furor Calligo

Transmission & Vectors

Furor Calligo is a mental condition stemming from an intense type of vertigo. It doesn't have any real transmission, but has been known to spread in cases of mass hysteria if enough afflicted are involved.

Causes

There are many theories on the causes of furor calligo, and none have been proven yet. Considering that the condition has only been seen in the floating cities, some scientists believed that it is a genetic inferiority present in some people unable to thrive or develop mentally at the intense elevation of Victoriam City. Others believe it is a heightened sense of Acrophobia, and yet others believe it is just abnormality caused by other types of madness.

Symptoms

This is a completely mental condition. It causes intense anxiety, rage, paranoia, and in extreme cases, visual and aural hallucinations. Afflicted people lash out, and become violent in their mad frenzy to reach the earth. People hallucinate visions of others flying to earth on wings, or airships waiting at the dock for passengers, and attempt to jump over the side to follow them. Attempts to stop them typically end in failure, as they will stop at nothing to jump. Some also believe that they can fly, often leaping from towers as well as from the city itself.

Treatment

There currently is no treatment, other than attempting to quell their madness under controlled conditions. Most victims are taken to Atlas Asylum for 'treatment,' which usually means locking them in a room away from the windows. Some are lucky enough to have a proper therapist, and actually can overcome it, but even then they usually end up spending their life indoors, where they aren't in sight of the edge. However, to get someone who is good enough to convince a patient not to die costs a great deal, and most families cannot afford it.

Prognosis

Furor Calligo has high chances of driving the the victim to suicide. Some cases have decreased symptoms with treatment, but many die, or spend the rest of their life locked in the Atlas. Others may never leave their houses, for fear that they would see the edge and feel compelled to jump.

Sequela

Calligo has made victims more susceptible to depression, severe anxiety, and severe mood swings.
