Mages' Alliance

The Mages' Alliance is where most mages are found in Lutar Minohn. There are independent mages and those who work for governments or private groups, but most operate through one of the colleges in the Mages' Alliance.   The Mages' Alliance seeks to unlock all of the secrets and potential of magic. This includes the science of artificing, which humans and gnomes tend to be best at. It involves infusing otherwise mundane items with magic to make them do special things. This has given way to special types of weapons and technology previously unseen.   A council of powerful mages oversees this Alliance, none of them possessing ties to any other organization, government, or ideological group. It is unknown to nearly everyone where this group meets, though many believe their meeting place to be hidden within Nar Minohn since this alliance has been around since the Empire's height.   The Alliance is often called upon by different groups for aid, research, or containment, and the Alliance's lower rank leaders delegate teams to carry out these requests. Containment often involves stopping a magical criminal, capturing a powerful magical creature, or securing a zone of wild magic. Research comprises many things, from sharing research to helping with the discovery of a relic or ancient ruins. Aid often involves help with a humanitarian crisis, or on rare occasions, wars. Typically, the Mages' Alliance avoids involving itself in the Wars of Succession, but if particularly powerful magic is involved which needs to be contained, the Mages' Alliance will assist.   Children are often brought here at a fairly young age once they show signs of magical aptitude in order to learn to hone their powers as soon as possible. Children who learn in this way often go to a school near their hometown and either commute to the school every day or visit home often. They tend not to spend all that much time with MA schools at younger ages anyway and are mostly taught to control their powers before returning when they are older to undergo more extensive training.

Structure

Councillor: One of 12 leaders of the MA, whose identity is unknown except by a special few.   Superintendent: Leader of one of the branches of the MA, Only a few of these superintendents know the identity of even a single Councillor.   Professor: There are many professors in each branch of the MA, each one specializing in a specific school of magic and specific techniques within that one.   Independent: Independents work for the MA but are not professors themselves. They often comprise the groups that complete outside requests.   Student: Students are the lowest part of the hierarchy. They are new to magic and still learning its ins and outs. While many may become powerful mages, others will be driven mad by its power or find themselves incapable of controlling it. Still, some manage to control their lack of control, becoming masters of wild magic.
