Great Sylgadic Newt

The Great Sylgadic Newt, or Veyetran Eft, is an amphibian animal used by the people of the Veyetræll Crater as a traditional means of transportation and a widely-used working animal.    It can travel through land as well as water, and is capable of going faster in rainy conditions.   It is thought that the Newts are related to the great Salamander living under Sylgadrig.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Essentially a large salamander, its body is adapted for the swamps and rivers of Veyetræll Crater. It has four legs and its skin is always wet. During dry spells, they have to remain humid, else they will shrivel up and die.

Ecology and Habitats

They can live in places next to, or inside swamps, rivers and lakes, but all wild populations of Veyetræll are extinct or feral. Cities in the Crater often have a small pond reserved for "newt parking" for that purpose.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

It was often used for trading between the lakeshore communities and the Isle of Sylgadrig, but its use has fallen when the Trællites brought riverboats. As a working animal, the Great Sylgadic Newt is still widely used to harvest algae at the bottom of the lake to feed people from rural communities on the Isle or from Droshos (who cannot afford Celestial sap).

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

The algae that forms on older specimens can be eaten as a delicacy.
